Mitchell Long
October 16, 2020
Mitchell L. Long, 60, passed away after a short and fierce battle with cancer on October 16, 2020 in Des Moines. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on November 14, 1959, to Norman and Patricia Long.
Growing up in Des Moines, Mitch attended Lincoln High School and was involved in many sports. Some of his proudest and most memorable moments came from when he served in the United States Army. He always enjoyed sharing his military stories with his kids. Mitch had a knack for cooking and ventured into owning different businesses, Coney Island being the most memorable. He was always up for a challenge and proved that when he received his pilot’s license. He would have spent all of his time in the sky if he could. Mitch was an avid Harley Davidson fan and could be found taking long road trips on his bike. Some of his other hobbies included: camping at Cutty’s, playing and coaching softball, golfing, fishing, and watching the Hawkeyes. Up until his diagnosis, Mitch worked as a production operator at ADM. Although there is much to say about Mitch, his most admirable trait was his infectious and easy going personality. It’s safe to say that he will be most remembered for his sarcastic and witty humor.
Mitch is survived by his children, Jamie Nicholson, Kira Long (Carlos Osorio), Matthew Long and Maci Long; grandchildren, Scottie, Morgan, Henry and Serenity; great-granddaughter, Alexah; brothers, Barry (Jolynne) Long and Corey Long; a host of other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Mason Long and his parents.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., on Thursday, October 22, 2020, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., in Des Moines.
