James Robert Miller
October 15, 2020
James Robert Miller passed away October 15, 2020 at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines. He was 75 years old.
James was born on August 16th, 1945 to Charles and Helene (Fellows) Miller in Douds, Iowa. James was a proud member of The United States Air Force and a Veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from the Iowa Air National Guard 132nd Tactical Fighter Wing where he worked full time as an aircraft mechanic on A-7’s and F-16’s. After his time with the guard, James continued his civil service with the Bulk Mail Center in Urbandale.
In his spare time, James was an avid hunter of turkey, deer and pheasant. As hunter safety was very important to him, he was a hunter safety instructor for many years. Photography was also a special hobby that he enjoyed. He had an eye for the perfect photo and wouldn’t let you leave until he got “just the right one”! James was a Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 280 and enjoyed volunteering while his son was a troop member. James was also a member of the Masons and The American Legion.
Left to mourn his loss is his son, Michael (Tammy) Miller; three grandchildren, Caitlin, Garrett and Lauren; his sister, Jeanne Grim and his brother, Paul Miller; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful special lifelong friends.
James was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Donald Grim.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. The family respectfully asks that masks be worn.
Interment at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors will be held at a later date due to COVID restrictions.

I met Jim when he and his mother moved to Bloomfield in the 1950's. We were good friends for 65 years and would visit regularly while living in the Des Moines area. One thing we both experienced was Vietnam, he during Tet of 1968 and me in 1971. Jim was always fun to talk to and only rarely had anything negative to say about the world. I am grateful for his many years of friendship and he will be missed.

I know Jim is already greatly missed by your family. Our Guard family will miss him also. Way back in 1979 on a deployment to England Jim,another Guard member and I took a long weekend trip to Scotland. Train travel thru Edinburgh to Inverness. A couple nights in B&Bs. A rental car trip around the Loch Ness. Pretty country, old castles and no luck sighting Nessie. Great weekend,Great company. RIP Jim

I have so many great memories of Jim, and like Ted Davis he was an early mentor of mine and a big part of my decision to make the Guard a career. Without question a master mechanic and dedicated patriot. RIP and may god bless you my friend.
