Marcia Jacobson
October 16, 2020
Marcia (Eggland) Jacobson, 83, passed away peacefully Friday, Oct 16, 2020 at Deerfield Retirement Community in Des Moines Iowa. She was born April 20, 1937 to Charlotte and Grant Eggland, and became the older sister to brothers Greg and Dan. Marcia was confirmed at Bergen Lutheran Church and graduated with the Roland Class of 1955. Marcia was active in vocal music, and had lifelong friends from Roland, particularly Mary (Boten) Twedt and Susan (Tjernagel) Amenson.
Marcia attended the Iowa’s Teachers College (UNI) and started her first teaching job in Forest City Iowa in 1957. Over spring break in 1958, she offered to babysit her nephews in Thompson. Her uncle was the veterinarian, and interestingly, her uncle’s new partner was the tall and handsome Duane Jacobson from Rake Iowa. Duane was covering her uncle’s practice for that weekend, as he finished his last year of his veterinary degree at Iowa State. On June 4, 1959 the two 100% Norwegian Lutherans from small towns in Iowa were married. Todd was 16 months old when the twins, Paul & Pam were born. She had her hands full! Marcia built cherished memories for her family of five with annual vacations, sporting events, and fun weekends & holidays with family and friends. Of course, these memories were captured in her meticulously organized photo albums. She also created a detailed record of our family genealogy, prior to the ease of the internet.
Marcia taught in the classroom for over 40 years, primarily in elementary education. She was also very involved in community and church activities, but her primary role was a loving wife and mother. She served a hot breakfast 6 days/week and seldom missed any of the activities Todd, Paul, and Pam were involved in (sports, music concerts and competitions, etc).
Among her friends, she was known for her bridge playing prowess and her ease of entertaining guests (such delicious meals and desserts). She was admired for her energy and organization. Marcia got things done. She enjoyed her retirement at Deerfield Lifespace Community in Des Moines, and was actively involved in setting up their library, church services, and arranging various volunteer services.
Marcia will be lovingly remembered by her sons Todd (Lisa) Jacobson of Iowa City and Paul (Lisa) Jacobson of Boone Iowa, and daughter Pam (Tim) Pennigar of Durham NC. Her beloved grandchildren include Grant (Maddie) Jacobson, Ben Jacobson, Paige Pennigar, Jill (Logan) Brawley, and Jacob (Taylor) Pennigar. Marcia’s first great-grandchild is expected in Jan 2021. Her loving brothers are Greg (Ellen) Eggland of Naples FL, and Dan (Nancy) Eggland of Miami FL. Marcia is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Duane, and her parents, Charlotte and Grant Eggland of Roland Iowa.
A celebration of Marcia’s life will be held for close friends and family at Hamilton Funeral Home (121 NW 60th Ave, Des Moines, 50313) on Saturday April 24, 2021 at 10am. Family will visit with guests for one hour prior to the service. Face masks and social distancing required. A private family burial will follow at the Roland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to Deerfield Lifespace Foundation, 13731 Hickman Road, Urbandale Iowa 50323 (memo: Marcia Jacobson).

Memories with our sons of Elementary days always include Mrs. Jacobson.
She uplifted, guided and brought clarity to all the lives she touched.
She was a wonderful navigator for so many.
Gods peace to her family and those grieving her passing.

I was very fortunate to be Marcia's teaching partner for one year at Northwest Elementary in Ankeny. She was such a kind, caring, genuine person. At the time that I taught with her I had just had my third little boy and Marcia insisted on the eve of my birthday that she and Duane keep our youngest son overnight so that I could go to a birthday celebration dinner with my husband. When we arrived the next morning to pick him up she declared that Baby Brandon was just perfect and she had even made muffins to send home with us. She often would share with me her technique for having meals prepared for her own family when they were little. She valued keeping to a schedule and planning ahead. She was truly a wonderful lady!
May her memory be Eternal.

I wanted to express my condolensces to your family when I saw in the paper. She was my 2nd grade teacher and I have fond memories of her in that year. I remember she pushed for the best of us, but with a nurturing and supportive way. I am now an elementary school counselor myself and taught 1st grade for 5 years prior. Mrs. Jacobson definitely had a role and impact in my life and I'll never forget her.

Todd, Paul, Pam and families, All of you are in our thoughts and prayers. Aunt Marcia was a wonderful role model. Her genealogy of the Jacobson family has been used and appreciated. Marcia always made everyone feel welcome. I remember staying at your house and before bed we had a treat of cookies and milk! Deepest condolences to all of you. We won't make it to the Celebration of Life, but will be there in spirit.

There are so many experiences with Marcia to reflect on, from being in music groups together and being roomates in college. She was always well organized and never failed to send greeting cards for all occasions. She always warmly welcomed me to where she lived and was anxious to get "caught up". A true friend that will be missed.

"Loss" not "Lost" in my earlier message. I felt I had to fix it. I couldn't stand the thought of Marcia cringing when she read what I had written.
Truly my condolences to all of you. Kent
