Donald W. Diamond, 81, of Pleasant Hill passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at the Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines, with family members at his side.
Don was born August 12, 1927, in Anthon, Iowa, the son of Frank and Lenore (Healless) Diamond. He graduated from Anthon High School. Don married Bonita Spiese on May 22, 1949, and they were blessed with three children, Karen, Jan and Jon. In the early years of their marriage, Don and Bonita owned and operated a grocery store in Anthon. Don later started in the insurance business, and in 1969 the family moved to Marshalltown where Don ran an insurance agency. Don enjoyed the insurance business and all of the resulting friendships. He was still active in the business at age 81.
Don also loved the outdoors, fishing, trapping, and especially working in his garden. He was very proud of his grandchildren and spent many hours playing outside with them. Don was a member of Oakwood United Methodist Church in Pleasant Hill and had also been active in previous churches, Anthon United Methodist Church and Hope United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. He was active in the Anthon Masonic Lodge.
Don is survived by his wife, Bonita; three children, Karen Diamond, Jan (Loren Lown) Diamond, and Jon (Mary) Diamond; grandchildren, Kathryn, Sarah and Joel (Jessica) Lown, Cara Diamond, Nathan and Eric Diamond. He is also survived by siblings Roxie Slater, Ralph (Delores) Diamond, and Dorothy Chinn, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marilyn Reed, and brother Franklin Diamond.
Visitation will be on Saturday, June 27, at 10:00 a.m. at Oakwood United Methodist Church in Pleasant Hill. There will be a luncheon at the church at 11:30 a.m., and the memorial service will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Oakwood Church. A memorial graveside service will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Anthon, Iowa, on Saturday, June 27, at 5:30 p.m.
The family suggests memorials in Don's name be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or the ALS Association.
