James R. McAndrews

James McAndrews, 81, passed away at his home Wednesday, June 24, 2009.
James was born April 3, 1928 in Des Moines to Peter and Marie McAndrews. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Marines. James was a railroad engineer for the Chicago Great Western, Rock Island and retired in 1986 from Chicago North Western Railroad. He was a member of American Legion Post #0682, VFW Post #9662, a lifetime member of United Transportation Union Local #0867 and N.A.R.V.R.E. Jim was an avid outdoorsman and a horse racing hobbiest.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 56 years, Betty; two sons, Steve and Doug McAndrews and their wives, Gwen and Judy; sister, Eileen Anderson; grandchildren, Katie, Kerry and his wife Janese, Devin, Michael and Kiley; and great-granddaughter, Emineance.
Visitation will be held Sunday, June 28, 2009 from 3 to 5 p.m. with a Memorial Service at 5 p.m. at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. at the Basilica of St. John, 1915 University Ave. with burial to follow at 2 p.m. Monday at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Van Meter.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.
