Service Details
Kathy Dahl- Lodrigues formerly of New Orleans died June 17, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center. Memorial Services will be 2 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2009, at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Memorial visitation will occur 2 hours prior to the service.
She was born on April 25, 1952, in Oelwein, Iowa, to June and John Dahl where she lived until 1960. She then moved to Des Moines until 1970, then moved to New Orleans, and then returned home to Des Moines after the Katrina disaster in 2005. She was an accomplished LPN nurse, a Professional Blues Vocalist, songwriter, musician and artist. Kathleen was beloved by all that knew her; generous, kind and selfless.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Frank; son, Gabriel Wood of LA; daughter, Kaitlin Dahl of LA; step-daughters, Ashleigh, Courtnie, and Bethany, brothers, Mike and Neal Dahl of Des Moines, IA; sisters, Diane Dahl of Des Moines, IA, Denise Dahl of VA, and Teri Dahl of Des Moines, IA; sister in laws, Deirdre, and Lolita; brother in law, Regal; grandchildren, Miyah and Kelsey; step-grandchildren, Chase, Conner, Madison, Christian, Tristen, Demere, Trinity, Mark Jr., Justin and Emily; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and dear friend Regina.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Patrick Dahl and brother in law, Joseph Lodrigues.
Memorial Contributions may be directed toward the Alzheimer's Research Foundation in loving memory of Kathleen.

My condolences to all of you who knew and loved Kathy. I've celebrated her birthday every year since I saw her last which was in May of 1975 and I will continue to do so for the rest of my life. She was just a great and wonderful spirit and I will never forget her.

Please accept my deepest regrets for your loss. Kathy and I were in the band WOW (Women of the World) together in the 70's and traveled to many places for about 4 years on the road. Although we have lost touch. I have remained close to Netti (our keyboard player during that time) and she has always kept up with Kathy's life and shared her life with me. One of our fondest wishes was to have a band reunion. I have been more in touch with Netti, KC, and Linda from the band. We talked about having a reunion but never really got it off the ground. I was deeply saddened when I received this news of Kathy. Please know that she was then and I'm quite sure of the present that she was always very loving and generous. We all kind of grew up together, even though we were only in our twenties, we learned much from each other. She had one of the most gifted voices I have ever had the opportunity to know and to have had the experience of working with. Please know that she will never be forgotten. She will always live in my heart. I have our old band picture from WOW. If you would like to have a copy please e-mail me and I will be glad to share what pictures I do have from those days. They were special times.

Every time I see an RC Cola, a pack of Export As, catch a blues harmonica being blown, or hear Aint No Mountain High Enough, I smile and am reminded of Kathy and how honored I am to have been on the same stage as her.
I didnt get to talk to her or see her recently over the years, but that didnt matter. The time I spent with her during work and travel had a profound effect on me. She was caring , protective of those she cared about and firm in what she believed in. She had a presence and What a Presence! Even though our time may have been short, I am thankful that I had the opportunity to have known her.
A natural talent like hers doesnt come around very often. We, the band members, knew it and all appreciated it.
She did send me some photographs just before starting her nursing career, showing off her family which she was so proud of, and she looked terrific, of course!
My and the Eklof familys prayers and thoughts are with Kathy, her family and all those who knew her and loved her.

My heart goes out to all of you!
I, too, worked with Kathy. I joined the band at the tender age of 21. She took me under her wing. Teaching me about music. Showing me that is was OK and actually a good thing to lose yourself in the song. She protected me from my own inexperience and kept a watchful eye. I was so lucky to have her in my life.

I first met Kathy in the early 70's when she auditioned for my band. The first thing that we realized that we had in common was that we both came from big Catholic families. From the beginning of our acquaintance, I felt like I knew her whole family because she spoke of them so often and with such great admiration. She told me how her dad used to sing in "40's Big Bands" and how just about everyone in her family had musical talent. I finally got to meet most of the family on a stopover in Des Moines and she was right, they were really nice! We traveled together playing music for about 6 years having the time of our lives. When she left the band, I was sad to see her go but I knew that she was a Forever Friend, and that we would always be close no matter how big the distance between us. I was lucky enough to visit her in New Orleans when Gabriel was about 18 months old (so cute). As we pulled into her driveway, the transmission went in our van. The next morning she sat on her porch and gave my husband Steve,step by step instruction on how to rebuild the transmission in our van. It was a success and to this day, Steve is still telling the story of the "Hot Chick" who showed him how to rebuild a transmission! When I first met her, she didn't even know how to drive! Kathy touched so many people, everyone who met her liked her because she took the time to get to know them. Musically, Kathy had her own style, and truly her own sound. I became a better musician from being in a band with her because she was always pushing to play different styles of music. I am so sad that she is gone, but I will cherish our last conversation a few weeks ago when she described the beautiful flowers in her garden and the names of all the birds who visited it. I will always love and I will always miss my friend, Kathy.

To Kathys Family
I had the honor of knowing and working with Kathy in the mid-seventies and toured with her for about a year or more. When she joined our band in Vancouver I was instantly drawn to her. She had a unique way of making everyone around her feel at ease and had a wonderful sense of humor. I admired her fearlessness and how she was a champion for the underdog. Her compassion, warm smile and amazing voice will always remain in my heart. Each time I hear Somebody Loan Me a Dime I will think of her. She sang that song with pure KD honesty.
Even though I have never met any of you please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. She touched us all in a very special way.

I was very saddened when I heard the news of Kathy's passing, she was a great person, we had a lot of laughs together. I was married to her sister Teri for 15 yrs and it was a pleasure to call her my Sister in Law . I wish the family all the strength to get through this time of grief and for them to know my thoughts are with them. hang in there!!!!

I find this very hard to except this very sad thing that has happened. Knowing that a great person, musician, vocalist and friend has lost her life. Although I haven't seen Kathy in years I did get a chance to talk to her a few months back. It was a special conversation. We toured together in the late seventies all over the united states and Canada. Kathy had a very special heart and had a great soul. I loved her cinnamon rolls. I also had a chance to meet her family neil and Diane while in Des moines when we toured. Kathy's voice was pure, soulful and carried a great message. She was loved because she was opinionated and set in her ways. She was helpful to all of us and just plain was gifted. She will always leave a thump in my heart. I never got to meet her recent family, her husband Frank or her children. I pray that her voice and spirit will shine down on you.
