Frank Flaherty

Frank Edward Flaherty, died on June 14, 2009. His memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Wesley Acres Retirement Community, 3520 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, in the Community Room/Chapel.
Frank was born in Des Moines on August 7, 1930, to William M. and Ethel Short Flaherty. He attended Lincoln High School and graduated with the class of 1948. He married Mary "JoAnne" Peterson on April 21, 1950, and had one son (Greg).
Frank served in the United States Navy from 1950-1953. He worked at Meredith Publishing and later Donnelley Publishing in the pressroom and photo department. He retired in 1991. Frank was a member of the Pressman's Local Union #86. Frank became a bicycle enthusiast and rode in 13 RAGBRAI trips as well as other bike rides. He was also interested in model railroading. After retirement, he and JoAnne spent their winters residing on the Big Island of Hawaii where they spent time with their son and his family. Frank enjoyed working at the Kailua-Kona Costco as a Food Demonstrator where he acquired many new friends. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Des Moines.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Bill and Larry. He is survived by his wife, Mary "JoAnne" Flaherty; son, Greg (Jackie) Flaherty of Hawaii; grandchildren, Neal and Cass of the Seattle area; brother Jerry (Mary Ann) Flaherty of Des Moines; in-laws, Mary Mae Flaherty of Des Moines, Winona Flaherty of Fort Dodge, Charlotte (Ralph) Schlenker of Indianola; and many nieces and nephews.
