Olga Laird, 92, passed away Saturday at the Jewish Senior Life Center. The daughter of August and Auguste Peterson, Olga was born October 14, 1916, in Coleridge, Nebraska. She graduated from Randolph High School in Randolph, Nebraska in 1934, and briefly taught school in Nebraska prior to her marriage to Norvell J. Laird December 25, 1936, in Des Moines. They settled in Des Moines in 1946, and were active members of St. Johns Lutheran Church since that time.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Norvell; her son, Nolan J. Laird and her eight brothers and sisters. She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Marcia Foreman; grandsons, Douglas D. Foreman and Charles L. Foreman, all of Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Kylie, Hunter, Parker and Jordan.
Olga was a past president of the Women's Auxiliary of St. Johns and was presented with a Life Honorary Eldership award in recognition of outstanding activity, loyalty and commendable service in 1988 by the church. She was also a volunteer coordinator of the gift shop in Lutheran Hospital for several years. She enjoyed traveling with her husband. In her later years she was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan and rarely missed a game whether on radio or television. She continued to live in her own home with her kitty, Moe, until her recent illness.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009 with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 600 6th Avenue, with burial to follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
