Milton Mosby Sr. was born on Friday, January 18, 1924 in Memphis, TN to James and Hattie (Austin) Mosby. He is affectionately known as “Butch” to his family. After being educated in the Mississippi and Arkansas school districts, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served in World War II from 1943 until he was honorably discharged in 1946.

Milton settled in Des Moines, IA after leaving the Navy and began working for Continental Bakery, the U.S. Government, and the Masonic Temple. Following his retirement from the government, he continued working for the Masonic Temple until his late 80s.

Milton married Mattie Earline Sanders on March 18, 1950 and they were blessed with two children, Laura Viola and Milton Jr. (lovingly known as Danny).

Milton could build or fix anything. He rebuilt car motors, added rooms to his granddaughter’s salon, and even built additional rooms for the family home. He was a very generous, loving family man who would help anyone in need. He loved his Scratch Tickets and enjoyed watching the Three Stooges.

Milton attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Des Moines, IA until 2018 when he moved to Texas to live with his family.

Milton was called home on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at the blessed age of 96. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, eight sisters and four brothers. He is survived by his daughter Laura V. Jackson of Hutchins TX.; grandchildren, Christine (Milton) Mosby-Johnson of Hutchins TX, Loretta (Larry) Chappell, Kimberly (Salam) Mosby-Ghumeim, and Drew Mosby; great-grandchildren, Addisha' (LaDarion) Gentry of Hutchins TX, Loren Chappell, Zakiya and Tariq Ghuneim; great-great-grandchildren, Audriana Mosby-Gentry, Logan and Camden Gentry of Hutchins TX; and one sister, Melvina Stewart of Portland AR along with a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. There will be a graveside committal ceremony with military honors immediately following at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
