August 21, 2020
Mary F. Greco, 69, passed away on August 21, 2020, at Taylor House Hospice. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on August 20, 1951, to Eugene and Ellen (Nauman) Blackford.
Mary is survived by her son, Peter Greco (Gail) of Robbinsdale, Minnesota, her grandsons Dominic and Angelo, her boyfriend Doug Alexander, sister Victoria Stout, brother Patrick Blackford, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Robert Blackford.
Mary was employed in banking for several decades, first as a teller and later as a commercial loan officer. During that time, she worked for seven different banking companies—beginning with Central Bank and concluding with Bank of America—but for nearly all those years she worked from the same third floor office in downtown Des Moines overlooking Locust Avenue. Later in her career she was an unemployment counselor for the State of Iowa in workforce development.
Mary loved her family, reading, cooking, NASCAR races and Scrabble. She was in a bowling league for several years. Mary was very involved with the Des Moines Jaycees where she earned the organization’s highest award, the JCI Iowa Governor’s award.
A private family memorial service will be held at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home at 3 pm on Wednesday, September 2.
Memorial contributions may be directed to American Heart Association of Iowa, because cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death for women.

Mary and I were good friends for many years. I am very saddened of her passing.
Even tho we lost touch several years ago she was in my heart. There wasnt a day go by that I wasnt reminded of something we did or somewhere we went. All the laughing and all the crying, we did a lot of that thru the years. My heart goes out to Peter and his family. I know they were Marys life whom she loved deeply. Also my
Sympathy to Doug and the rest of Marys family.

PJ, Gail, Dominic and Angelo I am so sorry for your loss. As I watched the keepsake video it took me back many years. I remember the last time I saw Mary was at a Christmas gathering at my house. It was so good to see her. I will remember her always. Rest in Peace Mary.

My family moved 3 doors down from Mary and P.J. Pete when I was 5 years old and I quickly became good friends with Pete. Mary had to put up with my presence often and I feel she had as much a part in raising me as my own mom, who was also a working single mother. My fondest memories was of her cooking, most especially her mostaciolli which she made by the stockpot full, and often. Pete would call and simply say that she made it and Id be at his door in seconds. I eventually became a chef and her cooking is my earliest memory of actually loving food. Mary, you were an amazingly gracious and strong women who left us too soon and will be deeply missed! Thank you for the positive influence on my life.

Mary and I were very good friends from the time we met in Theta Rho when we were young teenagers. After that we were close through High school at East but when we went out into the world we lost most contact as we got busy with our jobs and families.I've always thought of Mary throughout the years and hoped she was having a good and happy life. I met her beautiful baby boy Peter, when he was just weeks old. It was wonderful to be able to look at the pictures of her life and to be able to see how happy she was with her grandbabies. May she rest in peace.
