Robert Dreher

Robert Dreher, 74, of Des Moines passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 25, 2009 at the Carlisle Care Center with Hospice of Central Iowa helping tend his needs in his brave battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. Visitation with family present will be held after 2 PM Sunday with a service to follow at 3:30 at the Indianola Heights Christian Church. There will also be a visitation with family present after 10:00 A.M. Monday with a service to follow at 11:30 at the Scranton Church of Christ in Scranton, Iowa. Bob was born on June 23, 1934 in Glidden, Iowa, the son of Ivan and Hazel Gibson Dreher. He grew up in Scranton and graduated from Scranton High School in 1952. At 14 Bob played the trumpet professionally and ran the Scranton weekly movie theater as a teenager. He graduated from Northwest Missouri State with degrees in English and music and also completed a 2 year course in photography. Bob was in the US Naval reserve for 8 years and owned and operated numerous businesses over many years including Dreher Photography in Mapleton, Iowa, Eshelman’s Music Store in St. Joseph, Mo, A.M. Moving in Des Moines and Professional Piano Movers in Des Moines. For over 25 years he was a High School Band Director for numerous schools including Mapleton and Scranton in Iowa and Burlington Junction and Sheridan, Mo. For many years he continued studying his love for music at U.N.I and the University of Iowa. In later years Bob taught himself the French language and took classes at DMACC and Drake to receive his certificate to teach French and later did teach adult education classes at Roosevelt High School. He was proud to help bring the Alliance Francais of Central Iowa to Des Moines where he later held offices including vice president and president. In 1952 Bob married Marcia Krumm and to this union were born 3 children, Bobbie, John and Dawn. In 1985 he married his loving wife Charlotte. He is survived by his wife Charlotte, his children Bobbie Elaine Nutt-Alfred, John (Lynda) Dreher and Dawn (Brad) Baldwin, his step-children Susan Cook, Shelli (Glen) Burmester and Andrea McDannald, 14 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Phyllis (Gene) Kurth and brother Ivan Jr. Memorial contributions may be made to the family in Bob’s loving memory.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Dreher's passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family. Mr. Dreher was my band instructor and teacher at Maple Valley High School.

My condolences to the entire family. Bobbie, John & Dawn ... your dad was our neighbor, my band director, & family photographer ... fun-loving & great to be around when residing & teaching in Durant. I have many fond memories of times spent with him, your mom, and you kids as our neighbor.

Was sorry to hear of Bob's passing----He and my brother, Dick, had good times together----Dick passed away 10 years ago but his band is still playing at the Inn in Okoboji every Monday night in the summertime---You have my sympathies---

I was so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He was a great neighbor, band coach and friend. Although I haven't seen him in years, he was often in my family's conversations. He was highly regarded by all of us. He will be missed.
