Elizabeth "Libby" Anne Bennett Momberg, 78, died peacefully in her sleep at home on May 20, 2009 after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Libby was born on September 7, 1930 to Gilbert and Alice (Caward) Bennett in Omaha, NE. She lived there until age 13 before moving to Ames, IA with her family. She graduated from Ames High School.
Libby attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO where she earned a BA in Art. Upon graduation, she returned to Ames and met her husband, Darrel Momberg. They raised five children.
Over the next 25 years, Libby established a successful interior design business called Libby Momberg Design Studio. She also developed her gift for painting and became a well-known Iowa artist. One of the most important parts of her life was painting on weekends with the Saturday Afternoon Sketch Club. She loved her garden and enjoyed painting the flowers that grew there and elsewhere around the Greater Des Moines area. She was devoted to her dog Dancer and took her on Sunday morning walks to the Raccoon River Dog Park.
Libby always enjoyed being with her family. She is survived by her children, Richard of Seattle, WA, Jeffrey of Costa Mesa, CA, Diane Momberg Odom (Garry), David, Shelly Momberg (Scott Holmes) all of Des Moines; grandchildren, Megan Momberg of West Des Moines, Lang and Gabe Odom of Des Moines; sister, Helen Pratt of Boone, IA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gilbert Bennett, Jr. and sister, JoAnn Hogrefe.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, IA. Funeral service will be on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, 4126 Ingersoll Ave, Des Moines, IA.
