July 31, 2020
John W. Maier, 74, died on July 31st, 2020 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, IA. He was born September 5th, 1945 in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of Walter Henry and Margaret Kathryn Elizabeth (Bryson) Maier.
John graduated from Shaler High School in Pittsburgh, PA. Following graduation, he earned his bachelor degree in Math and Science from Westminster College, PA. He then served in the United States Air Force. After an honorable discharge, John finished his education with a Masters of Physics from Oregon State University in 1968.
While at Oregon State, John joined the staff on Campus Crusade for Christ. During this time he met his soon-to-be bride, Barbara Ann (Egeland). John and Barb celebrated 47 years of marriage in May.
After 5 years of Christian ministry work, John began his career in banking. Most of his years were spent at Brenton Bank of Iowa and finished at Wells Fargo.
John was predeceased by his parents. Surviving in addition to his wife, are his sons Jonathan and wife Pamela of Minnesota, Christopher and wife Anne of Iowa, Nathaniel and wife Angela of Minnesota; his daughter Jennifer and husband Cade of Iowa; and his grandchildren Macy, Timothy, Jack, Marli, Lauren, Will, Isaac, Addison, Oliver, Natalie and Noah. The children of John and Barb’s hearts are David Parrots, Nakri Jafri and Paulie Nok. John is survived by his sister Janice (Maier) Molnar and her husband Terry of Pennsylvania and many nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of loved ones.
John had many things he enjoyed doing; attending sporting and performing art events involving his children and grandchildren, visiting out of state family, working on house projects, family vacations, doing puzzles, yard games with his family, armchair QB for the Pittsburgh Steelers, countless hours working in his “train room”, and spending time with the family that he loved.
The visitation is an outside event, rain or shine, from 5-7 pm Tuesday, August 4th at Palestine Church, 1375 Hwy 210, Huxley. The family is requiring guests to wear masks and to adhere to social distancing guidelines, which includes no physical contact.
The funeral service and interment will be a private family event.

I am so very sad to hear of Johns passing! He was truly one of the nicest people I have ever known! He was so gentle and kind in the words he chose and in his demeanor. He worked so hard when he was on the Library Board. His willingness to do his share and then some of the work to be done set the bar very high for the rest of us. His loss in your life must be enormous. Please know I am uplifting you all in my thoughts and prayers.
