Lewis Hunter Daye
May 11, 2009
Lewis Hunter Daye was born on February 29, 1940 in New London, MO, and passed away on May 11, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines due to complications from surgery. He was 69.
Lewis was one of eleven children to William and Maude Daye. The family moved to Des Moines in 1945, where Lewis attended East High School. For 39 years he worked as a baler operator at RR Donnelly, retiring in 2003. Retirement didn’t agree with Lewis, who was used to working seven nights a week. He went to work at Wal-Mart, where he was employed at the time of his death.
Lewis was an avid golfer and Nebraska Cornhusker fan. Recently, he developed a serious addiction to a handheld Yahtzee game. Lewis loved to read, especially mystery novels and thrillers. He took a book with him everywhere he went and, upon finishing a book, Lewis would often leave it behind for others to enjoy.
Lewis was a devoted husband, beloved father and proud “papa” to his seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, two sisters, one son, one daughter and two granddaughters.
Lewis is survived by Patricia, his wife of 45 years; a son, Phil of Denver, CO; daughters, Traci (Bob) Kennedy and Ivy (Darren) Magner, both of Des Moines; a sister Rosie McGregor of Des Moines; and his grandchildren, Lewis Michael, KK, Alecia, Hunter, Reed, Patrick and Regan.
Services will be on Monday, May 18, 2009 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, IA. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Daddy,
Words cannot describe how much I miss you ... especially on Father's Day--a day when I should be thanking you for the wonderful father you have been.
So ... thank you, Daddy. Thank you for everything you did for me and everything you were to me: hero, protector, teacher, friend, sounding board, comedian, excellent grandfather to my kids, and example of what it takes to be a great parent.
I love you.

Ivy, Traci and Patricia,
I'm so sorry to hear about Lew's passing. He was such a great father and always had time to laugh and joke with us crazy girls after picking us up from dancing, skating or games. He was too young to leave us!
The Kaster and Estlick families are holding you in our thoughts.
Love,
Julie, Mike, Will, Judy and Doug

Dear Family,
I wanted to let you know that you all have my greatest sympathy. We know that Mr.Daye's passing will leave a void in the hearts of all those who knew him.
I want you to know that my prayers are with you.
When a loved one died a poet once said
This day is remembered and quietly kept,
No words are needed, we shall never forget,
For those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day.
Unseen and unheard, but always near,
So loved, so missed, and so very dear.
Family, may God bless you and comfort you.

I was so saddened to hear of the loss of your dad. I have many fond memories of growing up and our annual summer Meredith outing to Adventureland. Most vividly I remember that he was always smiling. My thoughts are with you and your family.
Take Care

To Pat and family:
Roxanne and I are deeply saddened to hear of Lew's passing. You have our heart-felt sympathies and prayers. Luckily, we'll be able to cherish the memories of a man who I admired and respected most of all for how he accepted his responsibilities as a husband and father. Thinking of Lew, the first thing that happened was a smile came to me. That's because I remember his sense of humor and playfulness. While he was a kind-hearted and very funny person with a great sense of humor, I also remember Lew as a very gifted athlete, who loved competition and who, being a perfectionist, hated to lose. Just a nice man who I really liked a lot. As far back as I can remember, I will always considered him a part of the family. Whatever the future holds for him, God bless him and God bless his wonderful family.
