George Iowa Dickerson, 90, died Thursday, January 18, 2007 at Karen Acres Care Center in Urbandale. George was born November 23, 1916 to Ruth and Ray Dickerson. They resieded on Des Moines’ Southside sometimes referred to as “Little Italy”. George was very proud of his heritage and loved fried hot pepper sandwiches. He was a Lincoln High graduate and always attended his reunions.
George was in the Infantry serving in World War II and served in Europe. He was proficient in arms handling and a qualified “expert” on the firing range. He was an instructor in this field. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
George managed a natural gas plant in Tama and most recently retired as mechanic for the Iowa State Liquor Commission. He was an avid bowler and appeared on television quite frequently. He enjoyed TV electronics and writing poetry. A poem called “Time” was published.
He was preceded in death by his wife Eileen “Pat” in January 2003; is survived by two sons, George, Jr. of Woodbury, MN, and Douglas of South Beach, OR; and his daughter, Joanne Couch-Levin of Arizona; 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday, January 21, 2007 and funeral at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 22, 2007 both at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. A reception/luncheon will follow at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
