Ellis "Chief" Lewis, 88, died at his home Wednesday, May 6, 2009. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 11, 2009 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 1746 Des Moines St. with burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St.
Ellis was born March 2, 1921 in Linden, Iowa to Stella and Warren Lewis. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in WWII and the Korean War. Ellis worked as an electrician for Iowa Power & Light for over 30 years before his retirement in the 1980s. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, American Legion Post 347, VFW Post 9362, the Electrical Worker’s Local Union 499 and the YMCA.
Ellis is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary; children, Gary Lewis and Cynthia (David) Fardal; grandchildren, Jeremy (Amber) Lewis, Anne (Scott) Crannell, Stephanie, Marcus and Eric Fardal; four and a half great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Robert, Walter, Dwight and Leonard Lewis.
