Richard Squires, 55, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Kavanagh on 56th St. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Richard was born December 4, 1953 in Des Moines to Don and Jean Archer and grew up in Runnells, IA. He attended college at Central College in Pella, IA then went on to Iowa State University. Richard worked for the State of Iowa for 30 years in the Administrative Services Printing Division until his health caused him to take early retirement. He loved going to Las Vegas and the Iowa Sate Fair. Richard was an excellent cook, having some of his recipes published in Better Homes & Gardens magazine and enjoyed having his friends and family over for barbeques.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his companion, Richard Beck. He is survived by his brothers, Donald Archer, Jr. of Urbandale, Terry Archer of Ankeny, Brian Archer of Des Moines and Pat Archer of Altoona; sister, Kelly (Richard) Mohr of Liberty, MO; nephews, Brandon Archer, Nicholas Mohr and Christopher Mohr; special friends, Sharon Worthington and Leon and Mary Jo Hofer and families; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.

Richard was my best friend in high school. I have a lot of memories of him.
We went to Upward Bound and Central College together. We laughed so very
much. He knew things about me that nobody else knew. We did some pretty
crazy things when we were younger.I don't regret any of them.
I only wish I had done a better job of keeping in touch with him.

I met Rich when he lived in Ames. I don't think I ever laugher harder than when I was around Rich. I was trying to think of a special moment to remember, but there were just too many good times to single one out. We kind of lost touch for a few years, but always managed a phone call or visit to bring us back together. My last vist with him was in the nursing home and even then, that dry, sarcastic sense of humor still brought a hearty laugh. I'm sorry he didn't get to stay home longer and enjoy more living, but life throws us some curves. Rich had a big heart for a lot of things and his sensitivity always shone through. I'm sure he'll be fondly remembered by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

I knew Rich since he lived in Ames. We had so much fun together. His laugh will remain in my memory forever. Even when he was in the care facility he could still make me laugh. But as fun and funny as he was, he was also very sensitive and caring. He will be greatly missed.

I had the pleasure to work with Richard for 10+ years. Richard was a dear friend and I will miss him very much. He made work fun, we always shared lots of laughter. Richard was respected by our customers and his co-workers. He was to BEST at arranging our potluck get togethers and everything was set up to a tee. He and I often met at the farmers market and had fun shopping. He was a real HOOT.
