Vaughn Belle Rinner, 92, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Mill- Pond Retirement Center in Ankeny, where she had been a resident for 13 years.
Vaughn was born May 4, 1916 in Wayland, IA to Chris and Vaughn Belle Schlatter. She graduated from Wayland High School in 1934, and worked in Chicago as a beautician. She returned to Iowa to marry Donald L. Rinner on October 18, 1941, and lived in Iowa for the rest of her life, living in Washington and raising 4 children. In 1965, Don and Vaughn moved to Grundy Center, and in 1970 they moved to Des Moines. Don died in 1982, and Vaughn moved to Iowa City later. She came to Ankeny to live at Mill-Pond Retirement Community in 1995.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, 3 sisters, a brother, and a grandson. She is survived by her four children; Jean (Mike) McCarthy of Des Moines, Vaughn Belle Rinner (Tim Bell) of Norfolk, VA, Don J. (Joan) Rinner of Iowa City, and Chris L. Rinner of Johnston; a sister, Lorraine (Harry) Suter of Winfield, IA; 7 grandchildren, and 2 great- grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A special thanks to the staff of Mill-Pond Community for their loving care during her last years.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 2 at 11 am at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 3120 East 24th Street in Des Moines. Luncheon will follow the service. Burial will be at Center Cemetery at Wayland, IA at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mill-Pond Chaplaincy.
