Peggy and family,
I am so deeply saddened to hear of my good friends passing. George and I worked together for more than 30 years beginning as young patrolmen in the 70s through my eventual retirement in 2006. George was the epitome of a good, honest, dedicated hard working street cop who was loved and respected by all. He was kind, considerate, compassionate and when need be, tough, very tough. When you were called to deal with the most dangerous individuals you wanted George with you and he always was.
The bible says in John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down ones life for ones friends. Without hesitation George risked his safety and his life for me, more than once, as he did many times for his fellow officers. For that we loved him. For that I thank him. He was what we call a cops cop.
It is police officers like George Simmer who make law enforcement in this country what it ought to be. His high standards of ethics and professionalism live on as examples to all who follow in our profession. The Des Moines Police Department is a better place because of George Simmer. Our community is a better place because of George Simmer. My life is better for having known George Simmer.
No more battles Georgerest in peace my friend.
