Evelyn Bernice McElvogue, 80, of Des Moines passed away on April 27, 2009 at the Altoona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be Friday at 1:00 P.M. at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home with burial following at Elm Grove Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5-8 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Evelyn was a homemaker and in-home child care provider. She is survived by her daughters Sandra Burton of Des Moines and Brenda (Clayton) Norris of Chariton; brothers Lester Davis of Des Moines and Lloyd Davis of Mammoth Springs, Arkansas; sisters Dorothy Ervin of Centerville and Thelma Visser and Hazel Phillips both of Davenport; 4 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years Ted McElvogue in 1999.
Evelyn's family would like to thank the staff at Altoona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Iowa Hospice and Wesley Acres Adult Day Center and staff for their compassionate care.

Dear Sandi,Melanie & the entire family of Evelyn. She was truly a great person it was with my honor & appriciation to have given her great care during her last yrs @ Altoona Nursing & Rehab! She will allway's remain in my heart as "Grandma" & I will allwas remember how she called me her "Sugar Lump".

I am so sorry to hear about Aunt Evelyn.
I remember going to Missouri one summer with your family and getting
Aunt Evelyn's car stuck in the brook. We were going to wash it for her.
I had a great time that summer with your family.
Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. I know in my heart if any one
is going straight to heaven it is Aunt Evelyn. Another memory,
that Lady could Cook!

Dear Sandie, Brenda & family,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. My very deepest sympathy to you both and your entire family.
Living next door and hanging out at your house all the time I have so many memories ...
Evelyn taking Brenda and I swimming at the old "Rambler Motel," while she worked. I also remember many wonderful meals at your house (and soooo many dishes to do afterwards too)! I can't forget being taken along on a vaction to Minnesota and driving your poor mom and dad crazy!
As a homemaker she excelled ... Evelyn would sing while she cleaned house or hung out laundry - and she kept the cleanest house I'd ever seen. :)
I remember other things too - I remember Tiny, crashing on the motorcyle with Sandie and a million other memories I wouldn't trade for anything. Your mom was a wonderful part of my childhood @ I'm so appreciative.
Know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry for your loss. As a close friend of Brenda, I came to know Evelyn and was always impressed by her humor and of course that stubbornness of hers. She will be greatly missed.
