Nancy L. Lantz
July 18, 2020
Nancy L. Lantz, 88 of Des Moines, passed away July 18, 2020. Visitation and funeral service will be at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th St, Des Moines, IA 50315. The family will greet friends from 5–7PM Wednesday, July 22 and funeral service will be at 10AM on Thursday, July 23.
Nancy was born December 20, 1931 in Des Moines, IA to William and Dora McAfee. She was the youngest child with 5 older siblings. She graduated from Lincoln High School and married Ernest Lantz on Dec. 30, 1950. They were longtime southside residents and loved watching their kids play sports for Lincoln High School.
She worked many years for the Telephone Company as an executive secretary, with an impeccable work ethic and attention to detail. She continued the friendships she made there and was part of the monthly dinner club with these women for 50+ years. She loved bowling, camping with the family, keeping her house and yard in perfect order, and even loved ironing (everything!!).
She regularly volunteered at the office at St. John’s Lutheran Church where Nancy & Ernie were lifetime members. She was so kind and willing to help others and drove many of her friends to appointments and errands when they were unable to drive themselves.
Nancy had a special connection and was adored by all her nieces and nephews. Rumor has it, the “McAfee Girls Gone Wild” weekends at the Ozarks with the female cousins and nieces created great lifetime memories! She had an extra special connection and adored her niece Mary Ann, who was born with Cerebral Palsy, and visited her in the nursing home nearly every day that she was there.
She loved having the family holidays and gatherings at her home, which were always welcoming, loud, crowded, with unbelievable amounts of food for all, and lots of laughter.
She is survived by daughter, Judy (Bob) Gibson, sons Ray (Linda) Lantz, Paul (Mary) Lantz, and Mike (Karen) Lantz; nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and many extended family and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest, mother, father, brother Jim McAfee, sisters, Mary Jane Groves, Jessie Jones, Doris Jones, Wilma Waddams.
All people attending the visitation and/or funeral are kindly asked to wear a mask.

Dear Lantz family, we are deeply saddened by the loss of your Mother Nancy. I've heard so many stories that involved her and she must have truly been one of (with Ernie) the backbones of your family. May she rest in peace with Ernie and the multitudes of friends & family in heaven. God bless you all.

My heart was broken at the news of Aunt Nancy's passing. She was always so happy and so fun to be with. We had so many good times and laughs at the nursing home when she would come to visit Mary Ann. I always looked forward to seeing her walk in the door as did Mary Ann. In fact many of the residents looked forward to seeing her too. They thought we were all sisters. She was like a second mother to Mary Ann, Doris, Casey and me. She was a blessing to not only her own kids, but to the whole extended family. I loved her so much.

It is so hard to say goodbye to such a loving woman. She has such a wonderful family and I am so grateful I got to live next door to them (well I practically lived over there) I am so happy we were able to get together for "The McAfee Girls Weekend", it was full of laughter and love. I will always remember watching the classic old movies with you and Aunt Wilma. Besides me growing up with you in my life, my children did as well. My thoughts and sympathy are with the whole Lantz Family.

I'm so very sorry to read about Nancy's passing. I knew her from when we worked at the phone company. She was in the same department as my mother, Phyllis Pollard. She was such a kind, sweet woman. I would see her occasionally after she retired and she was always pleasant to talk with. My sincere condolences to all of her family.
