Federico Montelongo
June 26, 2020
Federico Montelongo was born at Des Moines General on December 23, 1971, to Americo and Colleen Montelongo. He passed away at home on June 26, 2020.
Rico attended Cattell Elementary School in Des Moines. In 1980, his family moved to Bondurant where he finished his education, graduating in 1990. During his high school career, he was active in football and baseball. After high school graduation, he moved to Chicago where he completed his education at the Universal Technical Institute and began working for UPS.
Rico was an avid sports fan. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes, but he quickly became a fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. One of his greatest joys was tailgating at football games with his family and friends.
Rico also loved to travel, especially to Mexico to visit his grandmother, aunts, and many cousins. Las Vegas was also a favorite destination of his. Other interests of his included going to the Iowa State Fair and getting his 1965 Riviera ready for Goodguys Car Show each year.
Rico was a very caring person who was always thinking of others. He will be dearly missed by his parents, Americo and Colleen, as well as his brother. A.J.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Juvencio.
Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2020, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, 301 Prairie Street in Bayard, Iowa, with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery.
The family would love guests to wear their favorite team apparel during the visitation.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Rico.

My sister Mary Jo Coffman LaValla and I where shocked and very saddened to hear of Federico's passing. Mary Jo babysat Federico, and I would go with her sometimes. Then I got to babysit. He was such a sweet little boy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Colleen, and your family.

To all those that have called, posted or commented. My mother and I thank you very much. It means the world to us to know how many care.
To me he was the biggest DORK in the world. Yet the BEST brother one could have. The man couldn't do enough for other people. If he changed your oil, you probably left with new shocks and brake pads. And yet it was so hard to do anything for him. You had to do it without telling him or force it upon him. That was just Rico. A lot of life lessons and knowledge of technical things, I learned from him. Not to mention being a 9 or 10 yr old hanging out with you high schoolers. Many lessons there.
Once again THANK YOU!!!!!!!! SALUTE! Mi hermano
