Larry L. Vavroch Obituary
Written by his daughter
Larry Lee Vavroch, age 70, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 7, 2020. Larry was born on April 21, 1950, to Leo Vavroch and Elsie (Hlas) Vavroch in Belle Plaine, Iowa. He grew up in Chelsea, Iowa, but was a longtime resident of Des Moines.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Linda (Cheshire) Vavroch; daughter, Lisa Long and son-in-law, Michael Long; brother, Gary Vavroch and sister-in-law, Sue Vavroch; niece, Renee Gauthier, her husband Marc, and their two daughters May and Eleanor; and many other loving relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Larry Lee Vavroch II.
Larry graduated from South Tama County High School in 1968 and enlisted in the Army in 1971. He served as a Command Center Specialist and was based in Frankfurt, Germany. After his service, he began his career in radio broadcasting and journalism. Larry was a talented writer; he wrote for the former Press Citizen and was also a freelance writer. Most recently, he served as the Program Director in Des Moines for Family Stations Inc. for 30 years. Larry was also a proud graduate of Iowa State University and was actively involved with the University as an alumnus.
In his spare time, he enjoyed visiting the symphony with his wife and visiting other arts within the Des Moines area. He was actively involved with his church and the community. Larry loved conversing with people and meeting new people, he made friends everywhere he went. He especially loved his American Eskimo dogs, Spyke and Maci, and enjoyed telling stories of their antics. He never missed a meal or an opportunity for biscuits and gravy at the Cracker Barrel. Larry had a sweet tooth and found joy in gifting his daughter with chocolate (which she always loved).
Larry was loved by many and had a very kind heart. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Memorial services for Larry Vavroch will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday, June 29, 2020. The visitation will begin at 11:00 am, followed by the service at 1:00 pm. The burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Linda, my condolences to you and all your family during this time of sadness. My heart broke today when I heard of his passing. He was such a beacon of hope for me after the loss of my Mom. He would always call and tell me when Lifetime was showing a good movie and loved to talk about which ones he was looking forward to seeing, especially during Christmas. I was lucky enough to get to know him during our time in radio. He touched so many with his kindness and friendship and that will stay with me forever. My prayers are with you and may the Lord give you comfort and hold you close during this difficult time.

Dear Linda and Lisa,
I am so sorry to hear about Larry passing, but I know he is with the Lord and seeing Jesus face to face! I am so blessed that I got to work with Larry for over 16 years through Family Radio.
Larry was very kind, caring and loyal. I remember meeting you both at the Iowa State Fair every couple of years.
It was so supportive that he came to my Mentoring in Iowa award ceremony last year and we went to the actual top of the Capitol as a group! Larry knew everything about radio and KDFR...he knew everything about all the communities and stations that he covered for public affairs! There truly was no one like Larry. He will be greatly missed.
Our prayers are with you!
