Larry L. Vavroch Obituary
Written by his daughter
Larry Lee Vavroch, age 70, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 7, 2020. Larry was born on April 21, 1950, to Leo Vavroch and Elsie (Hlas) Vavroch in Belle Plaine, Iowa. He grew up in Chelsea, Iowa, but was a longtime resident of Des Moines.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Linda (Cheshire) Vavroch; daughter, Lisa Long and son-in-law, Michael Long; brother, Gary Vavroch and sister-in-law, Sue Vavroch; niece, Renee Gauthier, her husband Marc, and their two daughters May and Eleanor; and many other loving relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Larry Lee Vavroch II.
Larry graduated from South Tama County High School in 1968 and enlisted in the Army in 1971. He served as a Command Center Specialist and was based in Frankfurt, Germany. After his service, he began his career in radio broadcasting and journalism. Larry was a talented writer; he wrote for the former Press Citizen and was also a freelance writer. Most recently, he served as the Program Director in Des Moines for Family Stations Inc. for 30 years. Larry was also a proud graduate of Iowa State University and was actively involved with the University as an alumnus.
In his spare time, he enjoyed visiting the symphony with his wife and visiting other arts within the Des Moines area. He was actively involved with his church and the community. Larry loved conversing with people and meeting new people, he made friends everywhere he went. He especially loved his American Eskimo dogs, Spyke and Maci, and enjoyed telling stories of their antics. He never missed a meal or an opportunity for biscuits and gravy at the Cracker Barrel. Larry had a sweet tooth and found joy in gifting his daughter with chocolate (which she always loved).
Larry was loved by many and had a very kind heart. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Memorial services for Larry Vavroch will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday, June 29, 2020. The visitation will begin at 11:00 am, followed by the service at 1:00 pm. The burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Dear Linda, Lisa & family:
I am one of the (doubtless) many people referred to in Larry's excellent obit: "...made friends everywhere he went." Please indulge me in this long condolence as I am so sorry for your loss! I was very saddened to just learn of Larrys passing today so I hope youre still receiving/reading condolences online.
I live just west of Milwaukee, WI and while I never met Larry in person, for MANY reasons I sincerely wanted to! At least we got to meet by phone in the summer of 2016 when his call came to me as the HR Director for United Way. Larry was doing a series of staff interviews at that time for Precious Lives, a weekly radio podcast series about young people and gun violence in Milwaukee. Besides indicating the depth of his concern for people of all backgrounds, his contact in that context greatly encouraged me in the power of everyday loving acceptance. That a man representing a conservative Christian radio station and a long-time nonprofit could both show love to people, even if they differed in how they showed it. To put it more simply, Gods will being done. How especially vital in todays world!
I will always treasure that connection to Larry in a way I cant adequately describe in writing. When we first talked, upon hearing his rich radio voice I was immediately struck by how quickly, yet kindly he spoke. In a very informative, thoughtful, and respectful way he covered a lot of ground in a very short time! We spoke once or twice after that.
Please know that Larry made this world a better place and represented the Lord Jesus well! Again, my sincerest condolences at his passing and I pray that you may comforted deeply & directly by the Holy Spirit in ways only He can.
Linda Vavroch

Not too long ago the world was a much different place. In that quiet place in my memory, I can still hear your voice echo throughout my house, as I had Family Radio playing in multiple rooms. Thanks for our little chat at church. We will miss your light. See you on the other side, bro.

Larry was an old St. Joseph's School & Chelsea friend. We were not all that close growing up but a number of years ago, the Lord just brought us together again. He was a good man and I will miss him. Enjoy heaven my good friend.

Larry was a student in a broadcast class that Ken Eich and I taught when were professors in the Iowa State University School of Journalism. The three of us stayed in touch in subsequent decades. As Ken wrote to me today, if all our students were as dedicated and hard-working as Larry, our jobs would have been much easier and even more rewarding. Our prayers go to Larry's family and other loved ones.

With deep sympathy and regard, we can only imagine the hole that Larry's passing leaves in your lives. The video memorial is a beautiful snapshot of happy memories and the lives that Larry touched.
Sending you warm (socially distant) hugs and thoughts across the miles.

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Larry's passing. He was always a supporter of the Des Moines Community Orchestra, which I conduct. I fondly remember his interviewing me, when he was still "on air," a few days before each concert. On behalf of the orchestra, I want to extend our sincerest sympathy at this time and acknowledge what a loss it will be for us to not see his face in our audience when we next perform.

I will miss my friend Larry. One of the kindest, gentle people I have ever had the pleasure to know. Larry interviewed me a number of times and always had a soft spot for aging services and was interested in helping others. Bless him. My sincere sympathy to the family.

I am very sorry for your family's loss, and pray God's deepest peace and mercy for you at this time. I went to First Federated (now The Mission Church) and saw Larry at many events. I also frequently saw him at events at Calvin Community. He always had a smile and a kind word for anyone he met. He was a gentle, compassionate man who seemed to love his community. God's blessings to your family.

?.?.Dear Vavroch Family.:??
My deepest and most sincere condolences for your loss; this a loss to many. I am still heartbroken over the news. Larry and I worked together at the radio network, but for the longest time, I only knew his name, then later, his voice--strong and deep, yet gentle and friendly. Larry loved journalism, radio, community, and God (not necessarily in that order), so hosting public affairs for Christian radio was just the perfect job. As Virginia mentioned, the public affairs team was flown in to company headquarters a few months before the surprise layoff and that's when I was able to put a face to the name and voice. I don't know if Northern California was ever on Larry's bucket list, but that visit was such a treat for him! After my own departure from radio, he and I kept in touch now and then and he often reminisced about the once-in-a-lifetime trip to Alameda and San Francisco. Sunny California would be nice, he would say, especially during Iowa's long, cold winter months! Springtime in the Bay Area truly is beautiful, but Larry must be in total awe of the home God prepared for him. I think of my friend often and miss him very much. May our great God comfort you and watch over you during this very difficult time. Blessings..??

Larry and I started with Family Radio at about the same time approx 30 years ago. We would visit from time to time via the phone - no Zoom or internet back then - him in Iowa, me near Chicago. Larry was always looking for ways to help, and so full of information. When we finally met face to face on a business trip to headquarters in January of 2018, we felt like long-time friends. Even after Larry left Family Radio, he would call me from time to time or send an email with information about a contact he thought I could pursue for a story. We would share news about our families, or thoughts about our Christianity, and I always appreciated Larry's gentle demeanor and calm spirit. I shall miss you, Larry, and I look forward to seeing you again some day in Heaven with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

We will always treasure fond memories of Larry as a broadcasting colleague. In Network Control at Family Radio we would always dread having to wake someone up in the wee hours to attend to a fickle transmitter or a malfunctioning computer. Larry, however, was always a joy to work with. Besides always bearing a spirit of perpetual thanksgiving and appreciation for others, he always had a word of encouragement for everyone he interacted with. Later, in our respective careers as Public Affairs directors, he was a stalwart example of someone who always did his work with admirable zeal and passion. Our loss is His gain for eternity. Rest in peace Larry. Thank you Linda and Lisa for sharing him with us through his service in ministry, may you both find comfort in the Lord.

It is a great sorrow to hear of Larrys passing. Worked with him many years from Network Control at Family Radio. May you be comforted in the wonderful life you shared with Larry. A truer servant could not be found compared to him. I pray for your strength as you deal with this sorrow.
