Elva M. Butcher
June 08, 2020
Elva Butcher, age 98, died on June 8, 2020. She did not have Covid-19. Elva was born in 1922, to Vernie and C. Mae Airy. She loved to read at an early age so it’s no surprise that she decided to be a teacher.
Elva attended William Penn College where she met her future husband, Donald Butcher, of Deep River, Iowa. She earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Drake University in Des Moines.
Elva taught in several Iowa and California schools. Her last school was in Prairie City, Iowa, where she taught lower elementary for five years, then became elementary principal for seven years.
Elva also owned and supervised Village Vogue Beautique in Altoona, Iowa, for three years, sharing the building with her good friend Ruby Briar.
After retiring, Elva enjoyed traveling, dancing, shopping, and being with friends and family. She was always kind and generous to others, had a positive attitude, and young at heart. She will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Kathleen and Jaquelyn, their families, and many others.
Elva is survived by her daughters, Kathleen (Terry) Lebo and Jaquelyn (Adriaan) Van Boord, 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, niece, Jeanne Uyesugi, nephew, Scott Sponsler, and some cousins.
Elva was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Karolyn Robertson, her husband, Donald Butcher, and her longtime companion Robert Schumann.
A private graveside service will be held at Altoona Cemetery.

I am so sorry to read of your mother's passing. My first four years of teaching were in Prairie City. ('66-'70) Your mom took me under her wing and was a great role model and special friend. She was a classy lady! I still hang an angel on my Christmas tree every year that she gave me.
I pray your memories bring you peace.

I am sorry to hear of your mothers'
passing Jaque. By all accounts, she
served her community with grace and style and will be remembered by many. In the words of the Rev.
Billy Graham, upon contemplating his own passing, "I will not have died, indeed I will be more alive than ever, I will just have changed addresses. May
God bless you and yours.

Kathleen and Jacquelyn,
I remember your mom so fondly! In 2015 my sister Diane and I were looking for a place for our mom Ruth (Warren) and we stopped in Bondurant to look at an assisted living facility, and there in the dining room was Elva! I recognized her right away (she always looked like a Hollywood star and she looked beautiful the day we saw her) and I rushed over to introduce us.. We shared some great memories about her friendship with Ruth and we had a lovely visit with her. I reminded her how I was always impressed with her "California style" shoes! I am sorry for your loss, and pray you find peace and comfort in the memories.

Kathy & Jackie: Your mom and dad were important encouragers in our teen years; your dad, our principal, and your mom the positive cheerleader we all needed. Years later Village Vogue was the fashion center of Altoona and your mom the epitome of what or what not to wear. And, those shoes! So many fond memories. Were sending caring thoughts and a sad goodbye.

Such a kind and loving person. I'm so blessed to share a wonderful past with her. As a little girl I always admired her seashell earrings and fancy shoes. ? ??
