Duane William Bain, 86, passed away Friday, June 5, 2020 at Mill Pond Care Center, Ankeny.

Duane was born December 29, 1933 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Wayne and Jeanette (Stryker) Bain. He was an only child. He grew up in Cedar Rapids and around his high school years the family moved to the family farm in rural Bloomfield. Duane graduated from Bloomfield High School. He attended and graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Education. Duane enlisted in the U. S. Army and was stationed at Fort Gordon Army Base in Augusta, GA for two years.

Duane married Grace Johnson on July 14, 1957 in Roland, Iowa. To this union two daughters were born – Kristine and Diane.

After college, Duane taught high school Industrial Arts and Math for one year in Boxholm, IA. Then Duane moved his family to the Des Moines area where he worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber as an Industrial Engineer for 39 years.

Duane was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church as an usher, greeter, Sunday School teacher, and the treasurer. While at Firestone, he was an adviser for Junior Achievement for several years.

Duane was an avid bicyclist and runner for most of his life. He completed over 20 RAGBRAI rides along with many other bike rides throughout the Midwest. Duane was a member of Des Moines Cycle Club and Lake Country Cyclist. Duane and Grace rode their tandem bike on countless bike rides around Iowa. Duane enjoyed running and competed in several marathons in the Midwest, including the Drake and Chicago marathons. He was very involved in Dam to Dam. He also competed in several other runs along with his daughters and niece, Colleen.

Duane enjoyed woodworking and you could find him down in his woodshop often. He built several items for around the house. Duane was a great handyman and he could fix most problems around the house. Duane and Grace enjoyed traveling and vacationed throughout the United States.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

He is survived by his loving wife, Grace; daughters, Kristine and Jack Shepard-Bain of Des Moines and Diane and Eric Christensen of Hallock, MN; his three grandsons, Daniel and Tyler Christensen of Kettering, OH, David and Kathleen Christensen of Olivehurst, CA, and Devin Christensen of Hallock, MN; his sister-in-law, Carolann and Dean Henry of Story City, IA; his two nieces, Teresa and Rod Olson of Randall, IA and Colleen and Adrian Louw of Story City, IA; his cousins, Ronald Snider and Linda Lanke of California and four Bain cousins; and several friends.

Interment was held Thursday, June 11, 2020 at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, Des Moines. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
