Rev. Dr. Paul Myron Werger
May 11, 2020
Rev. Dr. Paul Myron Werger, age 88, of Urbandale, IA, fell asleep in the loving arms of our Lord on May 11, 2020, after a short battle with COVID-19. He was born to the late Jacob and Laura (Greenawalt) Werger in Greenville, PA, on June 13, 1931. He was preceded in death by in-laws Arthur and Nina Ellisen, brothers Clyde and Richard, and sister-in-law Donna. Surviving him are wife Dianne, sons Paul (Elise), Jon (Sue), Matt (Gwen), daughter Mary (David Smith), grandchildren Andi (Dave), Emily, Evangeline, Jacob, Samuel, Maria, Natalie, Magdalena, and Estuardo, great-grandchildren Kelly and Grace, sisters-in-law Jean and Dorine (Seymour), and brother-in-law Arthur II.
Having graduated from Thiel College and Luther Seminary, he served his first parish in 1957 at Mounds View Lutheran (now Incarnation) and then St. Luke’s in Bloomington in 1961. In 1978 he became bishop of the Iowa Synod of the Lutheran Church in America and later bishop of the Southeast Iowa Synod of the ELCA in 1988. In retirement, he served as interim bishop to the Saint Paul Area Synod and as interim pastor to Gloria Dei (Iowa City) and Redeemer (Jerusalem). Throughout life, he relished fishing, hunting, walking, reading, and Hawkeye sports.
He met, loved, and married Dianne in 1957. He spent his life with her in ministry and service to the Lutheran Church and the world. She was at his bedside until the end. As a father and a pastor, he was a shepherd both to his flock and to his family. His final words were, “It’s all grace.”
Light perpetual rest upon him; may his memory be eternal. A memorial service will occur at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mark Lutheran Church in West Des Moines, Iowa Food Bank or the Deerfield Foundation, c/o Deerfield Retirement Community, 13731 Hickman Road, Urbandale, IA 50320.

Dianne, As I sought an obituary today I came across Bishop Wergers. Please accept my condolences on his passing. What a joy it was to work with you on Oncology at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Thank you for sharing Bishop Werger with Iowa Lutheran, the bond between the church and the hospital was a true gift. I trust this finds you well and content as you rest in Jesus' arms.

Pastor Werger was the first pastor I remember as a child at St. Luke's. He was our teacher for confirmation, and a firm but loving hand to guide us as we grew. During our confirmation years, we were required to attend service every week, and my favorite part was always Pastor Wergers sermons. I will always be grateful for him - he was a true gift from God. My sincerest sympathy to all his family - he will truly be missed. Prayers and love to you all. Nancy French Fleetwood

We were saddened to learn of Pastor Werger's passing. We joined StLukes in 1968 when we were newlyweds. Pastor Paul Baptized all 4 of our children. We watched St. Luke's grow into a phenomenal congregation. The worship service always had great music and great sermons. We were surrounded by wonderful families and had 36 spirit filled years at St Luke's Today many of our friends after 52 years were from St Luke's. Our prayers are with Diane and family and we praise and thank the Lord for all those years with Pastor Paul.

Dianne ,I had just started cutting our lawn when Sandy opened the front door and shouted " shut off the mower and come here. " The rest of my 2.5 hour yard work contained years of memories of Paul as our families senior Pastor and as a Mentor to me on how I developed and conducted my career of 56 years, I'm now semi-retired. Paul married Sandy and I on June 12th, 1964 , and thank God my mind is still good because I remember that day and time so very well . Thanks Dianne for sharing Paul with so many people and may your memories bring Peace to each day forward . Our love Sandy and Darrell

Prayers and sympathy to you and your family at this time. I always remember when you spent time in Hayward in July of 1980. Fun memories sitting on the deck visiting and Paul and Bert fishing. Blessings to all of you.

Dianne, I was saddened to hear of Pauls passing. He so impressed me with his kindness and quest for learning during our encounters at the computer class. I wish I would have had the opportunity to introduce Paul to our daughter who is just finishing her internship to become a Lutheran pastor. I hope that she will be as effective a spiritual leader as Paul was.
Gods peace,

My heart and condolences go out to Dianne and family. I didn't know Paul directly but am a colleague of Paul's son Paul, who is a very good man, kind, thoughtful, funny and smart - a reflection of the man and father Paul is. It is a privilege to call his son Paul a friend. May Gods love comfort and sooth in His promise of eternal life.
