May 11, 2020
Lila Mae Cherry, 96, passed away at Edgewater Retirement Community in West Des Moines, IA on May 11, 2020. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 22, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines to celebrate her life.
Lila was born November 22, 1923 in Des Moines, IA to David and Florence Bosley. While attending North High School, she met her future husband, Darryel and they became high school sweethearts. After their marriage, Lila became a homemaker and loving mother to her four children. She kept an immaculate house and a beautiful flower garden. Living and sharing her faith with her children was so important to her. Lila was a kind and loving soul full of grace and had a profound impact on everyone she met. She welcomed all that she met and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. She made everyone feel important, especially her three daughters-in-law and her son-in-law.
Lila had been an active member for many years with the Highland Park Presbyterian Church, the same church where she was baptized as an infant. More recently, her membership has been with Covenant Presbyterian Church in West Des Moines where she devoted much of her time.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, David (Bobbie) Cherry, Joe (Anne) Cherry, and John (Liddy) Cherry; son-in-law, Scott Telford; 9 grandchildren, Jason (Mary) Cherry, Lindsay Stewart, Josh (Brianne) Cherry, Emily (Eugene Velednitsky) Augenackis, Greg (Molly) Telford, Melissa Cherry, Ryan (Jazzmin) Cherry, Alycia (Loren) Carroll and Elijah Cherry; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Dr. Robert Holland and Bob Cherry; nieces, Midge Rollins, Cindy (Peter) Tracy, Susan (Tom) Clough, and Kristine Johnson; nephews, Jim (Linda) Gay-Robinson, Robert (Lori) Holland, David (Karen) Holland and Kevin (Chris Ann) Bass; and many other friends Lila touched throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darryel; daughter, Judy Telford, and sisters, Arlene Gay and Nadine “Sonny” Holland.

I am so sorry to hear of Lilas death. She was probably the sweetest person Ive ever known. I have so many fond memories of her and all the Cherrys. Also, I had not been aware of Judys death, I was heartbroken to hear of that too. My sincerest condolences and hugs to all.

Neighbors as we were throughout the 1950s, with David as my best buddy, Lila was also my second Mom. I'm quite sure I enjoyed more of her cookies than anyone else's.
As I have looked back on her from my own adulthood, I realize that Lila was and still is the happiest person I ever knew.
There is not a doubt in my mind that Lila Cherry has earned God's grace.

Joe, John and extended family, we, the Hickey family would like to express our sympathies and condolences on the loss of your wonderful mother. Lila was just a sweetheart! A truly marvelous neighbor like all of the Cherry family.
That very beautiful picture truly captures that warm, gracious smile that so many of us were so lucky to have to received. All of our lives were enriched in knowing Lila. Rest in eternal grace.

I have many fond memories of Lila. When we moved my Mother, Carol Oleson, into the Edgewater Memory Care area, Lila was there to greet her! Lila believed they had known each other for years and they became best friends. I know you are remembering Lila's welcoming spirit and her positive energy. Our family appreciated how she made a possibly difficult transition for my Mom, easy and positive. I send you all my condolences and know that you are celebrating her life.
