Bekki (Blackford) Kirkland
April 26, 2020
Bekki Louise (Blackford) Kirkland, 49, of Ogden, Iowa passed away at her home on Sunday, April 26, 2020 doing what she loved; planting sunflowers. Bekki was born on December 29, 1970 at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
On September 30, 2017, she married the love of her life, Eldon Kirkland. She was devoted to her loving husband and step-son Aiden, and loved to spend time with them outside in the garden at their country home in Ogden.
Bekki is survived by too many loved ones to count. She was loving mother to Zack Bowden, devoted daughter to Ellen (Doug) Beckman and James (Ginna) Blackford, and beloved sister to Jill (Brian) Leonard and Jaime (Mike) Kidder.
Bekki was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and used the gift of her own journey to help countless women change their own lives. Bekki worked at the Des Moines Public Library as the Library Office Manager and was passionate about her career. Besides loving to be in her gardens at home, Bekki and Eldon loved the freedom of the open road on their Harley Davidson motorcycles and often traveled cross country together. A few of their most favorite and memorable trips were to Sturgis in South Dakota, The Bishop’s Castle in Colorado, Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and visiting loved ones in California. Bekki will forever be remembered for her infectious laugh, her giddy excitement over life’s smallest miracles, and most of all - her heart of gold.
The family will receive visitors from 12-2 p.m., Saturday, May 9, 2020, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. We kindly ask you to be mindful of your time greeting the family as we must work within the Covid-19 restrictions.
A private service will be available to livestream at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday through Hamilton’s website www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Bekki.

This is so hard to write and I don't know what to say. Bekki was such a wonderful person and always lit up the room when she walked in. She had so much love to give and gave it freely. She always made you feel at home and comfortable. I'll miss her smiles and her laughter. She is lighting up Heaven now and having meetings with all who have gone before her.

Our Library family met virtually and these are the words and phrases that were used to capture Bekki's spirit:
Gentle soul, Smiley faces on emails, welcoming, never judgmental, patient, friendly, always willing to help, super smart, never rolled her eyes when she could have, sweet, so knowledgeable, loved to learn new things, a perfectionist, could feel joyous over spreadsheets, supportive, adventurous, a mentor, took people under her wing, loved sunflowers, a great trainer, always positive, was personally interested in you, shared information, was an open book, well miss her so much, had a depth of knowledge, left huge shoes to fill, didnt need caffeine, was a ray of light, friendly, always smiling, bright, organized, high energy, can-do spirit, felt that everything was possible, earnest, believed in people, happy, genuine, natural, always working, loved her family, was a great daughter, bubbly.
She will be greatly missed by all of us at the Library. She was faithful, hardworking and a wonderful soul.

Eldon and Aiden we are so sorry to hear of Bekki passing, I know there are no word's to help you heal. We were so happy for you when you and Bekki found each other. I remember meeting her for the first time when you brought her to Colorado and how excited she was when she seen our field of sunflowers, She was always a ray of sunshine and touched everyone's heart that she has met. I can't help but to laugh and cry when I think of the goat we borrowed from the neighbor and was trying to hide it in the shed before you got home, We had laughed so hard we were crying. What a beautiful person she was and a honor to know her.
