April 22, 2020
Dennis Frank Steinkamp, age 75 passed away on Wednesday April 22, 2020, at Des Moines Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Dennis was born in Carroll, Iowa, to Lawrence and Estella (Reising) Steinkamp on March 29, 1945. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda, Iowa.
Dennis was raised on the family farm north of Breda with his 9 brothers and 1 sister. This is where he learned the family business of farming. Dennis attended St. Bernard’s Catholic School in Breda, Iowa graduating in 1964. He enlisted into the Iowa National Guard following high school and served proudly. He later met Vivian (Holm) of Iowa City while she was visiting her roommate’s hometown of Carroll, Iowa. He later married Vivian, on June 27, 1970, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. In this union he was blessed with four children Shawn, Tasha, Carrie, and Crystal.
Dennis would initially raise his family on a farm next to his parent’s family farm near Breda, Iowa. He eventually started his own family farm south of Wall Lake, Iowa. He produced hogs, raised cattle, and cash cropped. This is where he raised and watched his four kids grow for over 30 years. He later sold the acreage and moved to Ida Grove, Iowa, in 1999. Dennis worked for Gomaco Industry in Ida Grove, Iowa. Upon retirement, Dennis and Vivian relocated to Des Moines, Iowa in 2008. They built a new house near Altoona. Dennis was never one to sit around a lot, so to occupy his time he started to work part time for Menards until 2019.
In Dennis’s spare time, he enjoyed attending his three grandchildren’s events. These grandchildren were his world; Jace, Dylan, and Kinsley were involved in many activities like basketball, football, baseball, softball, soccer, dance, piano, taekwondo, and volleyball. He loved to watch and cheer on these kids, He was their biggest fan!
Dennis was a die-hard Iowa Hawkeye fan! He cheered on his Hawks each week, during the football season. As being the tailgate master chef for the group for all home games, he served pounds of bacon during the season. During the off season he loved spending time in his yard gardening, growing tomatoes, and making sure there was plenty of fertilizer on his lawn. He also enjoyed bowling, card club group, fishing, and hunting pheasants over the years.
Dennis is survived by his wife Vivian Steinkamp of Des Moines, son Shawn Steinkamp of Des Moines, daughter Tasha Steinkamp of Des Moines, daughter Carrie Howe (Mike) of Des Moines, and daughter Crystal Drilling (Joshua) of Eyota, MN.
