Joan Glee (Richards) LaVine was born July 18, 1938 in St. Paul, Minnesota to James Marvin and Pauline Ruth (Schnarr) Richards. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at Karen Acres in Urbandale at the age of 81. Her family was by her side and she was made comfortable by Suncrest Hospice.

Joan married Jay R. LaVine on January 19, 1956. Together they had a son, Jerry Dean LaVine and a daughter Julie Marie (LaVine) Davisson. Joan spent the greater part of her work career in the Des Moines School District Food Service Department. After that, she went on to operate Jay’s Sales Company, a law enforcement supply store in her home until her retirement. She enjoyed accompanying Jay on outings to Prairie Meadows. Joan also cherished spending time with her family.

Joan is survived by her sister, Bonnie (Harold) Messerly; brother, George Richards; her children, Jerry LaVine (Kathy Hogan) and Julie (Mark) Davisson; grandchildren, Joscelind, Jennifer, Jordan, Jaeger, Jacob, and Caitlin; great-grandchildren, Jaycee, Luciana, Charlie, and Dillon. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jay, and her sisters Shirley Leonard and Sharon Vansickle.

According to Joan’s wishes, a cremation will occur and she will be laid to rest with her husband, Jay, at Iowa Veterans Cemetery later in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to a charitable fund of your choice to lessen the effects of the current pandemic.
