Robert Glen Meeks

Robert G. “Bob” Meeks, age 89, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020 with his loving family by his side. He was born in Indianola, Iowa on February 27, 1931, and was the fifth of six boys born to Orval and Velma Meeks. He graduated from Keswick High School in 1948 at the age of 17. After graduation he briefly worked at the lumberyard, and then enlisted in the Army, proudly serving his country during the Korean War. He accomplished the rank of Corporal and spent much of his time operating the searchlights on the front lines. Bob served for nearly two years, during which time he was awarded multiple medals, including the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged.

Robert met the love of his life, JoAnn Witt in 1953 and the two were married in 1954. They moved to Des Moines where he took business classes at Capital City Commercial College. He was employed as an underwriter for several insurance companies before going to work for The City of Des Moines. He retired at the age of 56, so he and JoAnn could live life to the fullest – sharing a love for travel. Bob and JoAnn travelled extensively together, visiting all 50 states and several foreign countries. In their later years, they enjoyed being Florida ‘Snowbirds’ to escape the Iowa winters.

In his free time, Bob enjoyed being outdoors – he had a passion for yardwork and tending to his flower gardens. He was handy and found pleasure in fixing and building things – and he especially loved country life where he could enjoy watching the birds and other wildlife from his back deck. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind, loving, generous, witty, and humble man. Although he was a man of few words, his words were meaningful, and often quick to inspire others to laugh. He loved his family above all else and took pride in being a good husband, father and grandfather. He will be forever missed by his family and four-legged friends.

Those left to cherish Bob’s memory include his loving wife of 66 years, JoAnn; his daughters, Reylon Ann Meeks of Runnells, IA and Danielle Lee (Ned) Clymer of Ormond Beach, FL; his grandson, Clint Clymer and granddaughter, Colby Clymer; 3 sisters-in-law, Rosemary, Ruby and Kate; many nieces and nephews; and beloved dog, Suzy.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Orval and Velma Meeks; step-mother, Agnes Meeks; and his brothers, Everett (Mary Louise), Cecil, Buel, Leon (Hazel) and Mark.

A private graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 20, 2020 at Rising Sun Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be announced by the family at a later date.
