Dr. Gaylord F. Tryon
March 25, 2020
Dr. Gaylord F. Tryon, of Johnston, Iowa, passed away of sudden multiple health conditions on March 25, 2020. He was born in 1937 (at home) in Defiance, Iowa. Gaylord was the fourth child of Clarence and Dorothy Tryon’s ten children (8 boys and 2 girls).
The family moved to Glidden, Iowa in 1944 whereupon Gaylord enrolled in the Glidden Consolidated School District in the second grade. He graduated from Glidden-Ralston High School in 1955. Upon graduation, Gaylord attended Buena Vista College for two years and then transferred to Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa). He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1959 with a BA degree--majoring in Physical Education and a minor in Driver Education and Biology.
Gaylord’s first teaching job was in Sac City, Iowa (junior high social studies, driver education, and coaching). His first administrative position was at Odebolt-Arthur as an elementary principal. From there his family moved to Ames where Gaylord became the principal at Crawford and Whittier Elementary Schools and later on was appointed as the first principal of the new Northwood Elementary School. He earned his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado and his Doctorate Degree in Educational Administration from Iowa State University.
Gaylord was appointed as the first Executive Director of the Iowa Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals in 1973. Ten years later, the Elementary and Secondary Principals combined into one statewide organization and Gaylord was appointed as this organization’s first Executive Director. In 1987, the principals’ organization merged with the superintendents’ association to form what is now called School Administrators of Iowa (SAI). Gaylord was appointed the first Executive Director of SAI and served in that capacity until his retirement in December 2000.
In March of 2001, Gaylord started a new venture as a consultant to help school districts hire superintendents and building principals. This organization, G. Tryon and Associates, successfully completed over 200 searches during his tenure as president and owner of the firm. Starting the organization from scratch, and with the very able help of some trusted colleagues, he was very proud of what the organization was able to accomplish and the footprint it has made on public education in Iowa.
Gaylord devoted his entire life modeling the qualities we all value—respect and love for his mom and dad, the importance of family, hard work, integrity, character, citizenship, and a love for God and country. He was a kind and caring person, whose quick wit and humor combined with his positive outlook, touched many. And, very important to Gaylord, he seldom missed an opportunity to vote in a local, state, or national election and to display the American flag.
Some of Gaylord’s favorite activities included travel (driving), golfing, playing cards with his brothers, playing board games with family members, laughing, working out, yard work, doing crossword puzzles, and spending time with his three favorite canine friends—Shelby, Kasey and Kate Bentley.
Gaylord is survived by his loving wife, Sandy; four very special children, Jeff (Jodi), Susan Nutini (Jay), Crystal DeBey (Darrell), and Kevin (Lori); two wonderful step daughters, Jill Neil (Luke) and Lindsay Law; nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and two step grandchildren. Gaylord is also survived by brothers, Dick and Randy and sisters, Donna Stevens (Bruce) and Nancy Watson (Warren); and sisters-in law, Maxine Tryon, Sally Tryon, Jan Tryon, Janet Tryon and Jerilyn Tryon.
Gaylord was preceded in death by his loving parents (Clarence and Dorothy Tryon), and brothers Ray, Bill, Dale, and Larry. Since Gaylord’s passing, his brother Jerry joined him on August 31, 2020.
A visitation will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines on Saturday, September 12, 2020 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm with a celebration of life to follow at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, any donations should be given to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. Online condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

Dear Sandy and family,
I had the opportunity in my career to work with Gaylord and a number of others in education who have sent their condolences online. I would add "ditto" to all those comments and we know Gaylord would probably blush. Collectively, the respect Gaylord had from his peers was remarkable as his quiet demeanor and thoughtful judgement were always at work. And, when one would least expect it, he'd provide some levity in some difficult settings. He always treated others with respect and kindness. We were all lucky to have shared a little part of his journey here on earth to champion education in Iowa. He will be missed. We hope you'll find ways to celebrate his life for all of us and find some solace knowing how much he was appreciated by so many.

Dear Sandy, Jeff, Susan, Crystal, Kevin, Jill, Lindsay, & family:
My most sincere condolences to each of you during the passing of our good and admired friend, Gaylord Tryon.I first met Gaylord when I became an elementary principal in the DMPS in 1969 when he was Executive Director of the School Administrators of Iowa. Throughout my career as a high school vice principal, middle school vice principal, middle school principal, and finally high school principal in the DMPS, I visited with Gaylord several times each year and found him to be extremely helpful, professional, friendly, and a man of high moral character. Gaylord was admired by everyone he met, and he just made you feel good to be around him. My thoughts and prayers will be with each of you in the days that lie ahead.

I was sadden to read of the passing of Gaylord last week. Although I did not know him long, we got to know each other at Aspen/Genesis as we discussed the topics of the day. We always ended our conversations with a laugh and usually in agreement on how to fix the world. I will truly miss him. Condolences to his entire family.
