Service Details

Craig Eugene Carlson, 78, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, February 29, 2020. Services will be held at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines, IA on Friday, March 6 with visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and the service at 4:00 p.m.

Craig was born on June 24, 1941 in Iowa City, IA to Evelyn (Temple) and Edwin Carlson. He graduated from Iowa State University and then Drake University School of Law. While in college, Craig married the love of his life, Sherry Reynolds on January 26, 1963. Craig started his career as an attorney and worked for 25 years with the Johnson Law Firm in Fort Dodge, becoming a senior partner. He retired from the firm and moved to West Des Moines to be an independent financial advisor and estate planner. He was a lifetime member of The Iowa Bar Association and served as president of the Fort Dodge Community School Board.

Craig dearly loved his grandchildren and with great pride attended many concerts, plays, and sporting events. He was so famous for his road trips, in his favorite vehicle, that his grandchildren nicknamed him “Jeep.” In his free time, Craig enjoyed life at Lake Panorama, and many vacations to Aspen and Sanibel Island with his family.

This devoted husband, father and friend is deeply missed by his wife, Sherry; their children, Curt (Carey) Carlson, Tonya (Jerome) McCarville, and Marc (Sheri) Carlson; grandchildren, Taylor, Lily, Caleigh, Steven (Sarah), Finnegan, Brynn, Benjamin, Britt, Brayden, and Bode; his mother-in-law, Beatrice Reynolds; brothers-in-law, Jerry and Liz, Brent and Sally, Kurt and Debbie, and Kim and Debby Reynolds; sister-in-law, Kate Reynolds; and his loving nieces and nephews.

Craig was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Arvin Reynolds; his brother-in-law, Steven Reynolds; and his nephew, Dirk Reynolds
