Bev C. Mahon
March 27, 2009
Bev C. ("Mr. Varsity") Mahon, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 27, 2009.
He was born in Omaha, Nebraska on Oct. 21, 1922 to Elton C. and Georgia G. (Hillard) Mahon. He grew up in Monroe, Iowa and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines.
He attended Stanford University and served as a cryptographer with a B-29 outfit on Tinian Island in World War II. On May 13, 1950 he married the love of his life, Zora Fini.
His interest in movies as a youngster led to a life-long passion in the motion picture business for 78 years. He had worked for National Screen, Paramount Pictures and owned and operated theatres in Pella; Omaha, Neb.; Sioux City and Des Moines.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Zora; daughters, Denise (Robert Newton) and Michele Mahon; sons Mike and Greg; and favorite grandchild, Celeste, who all reside in West Des Moines.
Bev was a hard-working person who will be most remembered for his wit and kindness. He had a wealth of faith expressed not so much by words but by actions. A warm host, he will be missed, but not forgotten, by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by a vigil on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Sacred Heart Church, 1627 Grand Ave in West Des Moines with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
Condolences may be sent to the Mahon family at www.hamiltonsfuneralhome.com.

My sympathy and prayers on the loss of your loved one. He was a great person and many are appreciative of the great movies he brought to the Varsity. He sold me my ticket when I saw Gran Tarino a few months back, but several weeks ago when I saw Slum Dog I noticed Bev wasn't in the ticket booth. I should have asked if he was ill. He will be missed by many and especially by all the Varsity patrons. May he rest in peace and God's blessing to his family during this time of loss.
Sincerely,
Sister Ladonna Woerdeman, OSF

Dear Zora, Denise and family,
We are so very sorry to hear about the loss of your husband - dad. Whenever I saw your dad he had a smile, made me smile and lit up the entire room. Words do nothing at this time but I want you to know we are thinking and praying for you. Please do not hesitate to call me if you need anything at all.

I just learned that Bev bought The Varsity the same year I was born. No wonder I remember that place as far back as I can remember anything. I don't know that I ever really had a conversation with him & yet he's responsible for some of my fondest memories. May his show[s] go on forever...MW

Please accept my sympathies. Bev Mahon's dedication to the Varsity was a major influence in buying my home within walking distance of the theater. I always knew he would bring the best quality cinema to our town. Again, my condelences. I will miss him.

Zora, Denise and Family of Bev,
A sincere sense of loss enveloped me yesterday when I heard that Bev had died. The last time I went to The Varsity he was there as always at the ticket booth, greeting and selling the tickets. Certainly, he was an institution on the Des Moines scene. Needless to say, he will be missed by us "the public".
His legacy to his family is his gentle, caring ways. And, he has given that part of himself to each of you. Know that the prayers of many acquaintances and friends are with each of you as you plan his services and celebrate the memories and gifts he has left behind. May God hold you very close and assure you of a reunion with him in Heaven. Blessings! Char

My maiden name was Janet Maynard and I graduated with Bev from Roosevelt in 1940. Because our last names were similar, we always ended up with close desks. Bev was a really nice friendly person and I am sorry he is gone and his family are in my thoughts. There are so few of our classmates left now but I do have very fond memories of those high school days. Sincerely, Mrs. Janet Timmins- Ocala, Florida
