Service Details

Shirley Sly, 75, passed away Friday, March 27, 2009, at home after a brave battle with cancer. Services will be held Tuesday, March 31 at 10 a.m. at Hamilton Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Friends may call on the family, Monday, March 30, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Shirley was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to William and Caroline Harms, and lived in Iowa and Minnesota before settling in Des Moines. She worked for years as a waitress at The Elbon Club and Michael’s. She loved traveling, spending time in her kitchen, and shared her love by cooking for her large family who will miss her cinnamon rolls and buster bar dessert.

She is survived by her sisters, Donna Sivesind and Sharon Larsen, brothers Duane Harms (Verna) and David Harms (Carol) , brother-in-law Bill Ehling, sisters-in-law Donna Harms and Betty (Bill) Maxwell; and ten children: Mike Theis (LeAnn), Anthony Theis (Linda), Chris Theis (Marsha), Greg Theis (Lisa), Steve Theis (Michelle), Bill Sly (Kate), Bob Sly (Debbie), Mike Sly, Pam Kelly (Craig), Jeff Sly and 26 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by Walt, her husband of 33 years; sons Randy and Dennis Theis; sisters Mabel Ehling and Cora Harms; brothers Harold, Willard and Roger Harms; and brother-in-law Gordon Sivesind.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Alley, Dr. Molina, and the wonderful staff on the 8th floor of Mercy Hospital for their kind and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Lance Armstrong LIVESTRONG foundation.
