Roger Mays

Roger Ray Mays, 75, of Des Moines passed away Sunday, February 2, 2020 at Mercy One Hospice House, Johnston, Iowa, surrounded by his family.

The family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 6th at the funeral home followed by burial at Highland Cemetery in Bayard, Iowa.

Roger was born March 10, 1944 to Ray Earl Mays and Iva Peardon Mays of Bayard, Iowa. He graduated from Bayard High School with the Class of 1962. Roger married Sharon Thomas on October 26, 1968 in Jamaica, Iowa. To this union two sons were born, Raymond and Adam. Roger worked for U S Food Service as a warehouseman and truck driver. He retired in 1998. He enjoyed camping with his family, woodworking and genealogy.

Roger is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Sharon; sons, Raymond (Jami) Mays of Norwalk, Iowa and Adam (Melinda) Mays of West Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Riley and Regan Mays of Norwalk, Iowa and Sidney Mays of West Des Moines, Iowa; sister-in-law, Deloris (Boyd) Crees of Goldfield, Iowa; nephews, Thomas (Tracy) Crees and Brad (Tracy Marie) Crees of Goldfield, Iowa; niece, Jolene (Tim) Rasmussen of Clarion, Iowa; as well as a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Iva Mays.
