Jennifer Marie Wu
February 01, 2020
Jennifer Marie Wu, 32, of West Des Moines, IA, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Iowa Methodist Hospital surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with illness. Jennifer was born December 20, 1987 in Des Moines, IA to Robert and Nicole Wu and raised in West Des Moines. She graduated from Valley High School, and then from Iowa State in Biomedical Drawing and Illustration. She also studied abroad at the University of Tazmania while in college. She was working on her Master’s in Public Health from Des Moines University and was employed at Wellmark.
Jennifer was so incredibly strong. She always persevered, and no matter what life brought her way, she fought for life, and to live life on her terms. She had a passion for travel, new adventures, and meeting new people. Her travels took her to places near and far, such as Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Mexico, Quebec, Sweden, London, Amsterdam, Australia, and Taiwan and she enjoyed visiting art museums and cathedrals while traveling. Jennifer also loved the outdoors. She enjoyed the peacefulness of the countryside, going on hikes, camping, hunting, rock climbing, and volleyball. She loved to bake and was always trying out new recipes. Jennifer was generous with friends and strangers, and volunteered with various organizations. Most recently, she was providing baked goods for a hospice center.
She is survived by her parents, Robert and Nicole Wu; her siblings, Frances (Eric) Grantham of Kansas City, MO and Jonathan Wu; and her beloved nephews, Jackson and Owen Grantham. Jennifer was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents and her maternal grandfather.
Jennifer’s life will be honored during a service on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA. The family will greet friends following the service.

Oh no! I'm very sorry for your loss and very sad to hear. Jennifer and I were in orchestra and learned Spanish together in high school. We lost touch after high school but I was actually thinking about her just a couple of days ago.
I won't be able to make it to Iowa for her Service but she and the Wu family will be in my thoughts.

Wu family, you are in my thoughts. Jen was a BPMI classmate of mine at Iowa State; I don't recall a single moment that she was not kind and caring to those around her. My deepest sympathies to you all.

My condolences to the Wu family. I remember Jennifer as a wonderful viola student and member of the Valley Orchestra. Memories of our trip to Italy in 2004 always bring a smile to me. Jennifer was a joy and bright light to the world.

I got the pleasure of training Jennifer when she started with Wellmark. We became buddies and would often go to the gym together. She was so sweet, smart and she had a silly side also. I am so saddened to hear she has passed. I want to send my deepest sympathy to all of her family.

My genuine condolences to Jen's family and loved ones. I had the pleasure of meeting Jen in 2018 through a mutual good friend (Nick B.), as we all shared a common interest for nature and exploring. We have fun camping memories together which I will cherish. Jen was extremely easy to get along with and as a result became someone who I consider a friend of my own as well. I always felt comfortable being myself around her. Over the past year, we talked many times about traveling and shared our excitement of travel research with one another. Jen is very inspiring, and I had no idea she was battling anything health-wise on top of all the living to the fullest she was doing. What a true strength, she's definitely a role-model in my eyes and I'm grateful to have gotten to know her. Wishing strength and peace to her family.
With love, Marie
