Service Details

Larry Marvin Abrams was born October 22, 1941 in Le High, Iowa to Ralph and Mildred (Hewitt) Abrams. He went home to his Heavenly Father on Monday, January 27, 2020 at the age of 78.

Before moving to Des Moines he lived and worked in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He left Olsen’s Distributing after ten years of service. While living in Fort Dodge, he attended a church under the direction of Pastor Bessie Williams. That is where he and his first wife, Sandy Abrams raised their four children, Sandy, Mark, Janet and Matt. After the children made lives of their own, Larry and his first wife moved to Des Moines, Iowa to be closer to their children until Sandy went home to be with Jesus. Larry then lived with his son, Matt, and granddaughter, Kearra.

Larry came to know the Lord many years ago and loved God and His word (Bible). He was a member of Heritage Assembly of God Church for many years. Larry was a quiet man who loved music. He enjoyed singing old gospel music and touching the hearts of people through song. Larry especially enjoyed singing with the barbershop chorus. He also sang at the senior center and with his present wife, Mary, and his children when they were younger. There was a story he would tell about his mother telling him to turn off the radio, but he said it was him singing, not the radio. That’s how good of a singer he was!

Larry loved to work on his word search puzzles. Larry would challenge Mary to see who could complete a puzzle first, and Larry would always win. Larry loved to just jump in the car and joy ride, looking at the scenery. He loved to work outside doing yard work or removing snow. He loved to plant flowers in the sunshine. Larry enjoyed cooking and could whip up a yummy batch of goulash. He loved his V8 Juice and grapefruit.

Left to carry on Larry’s memory are his beloved wife, Mary; his children, Sandy Kay of Fort Dodge, Mark Abrams, Janet Bradley (Mark), and Matt Abrams, all of Des Moines; 6 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Sandy Abrams, son, Larry Jr. and his parents.

Funeral service will begin Friday, January 31, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Heritage Assembly of God, 5051 NE 5th Street, Des Moines, IA 50313. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.
