Dorothy Mae Hays Hemmye, 92, passed away January 19, 2020, at the Madrid Home in Madrid, Iowa, where she had resided since August of 2017.

Dorothy was born December 13, 1927, in Scarville, Iowa to George and Mae (Rossiter) Hays. She graduated from Thompson High School in Thompson, Iowa in 1945. Dorothy worked as a secretary for Forest City Iowa Lockers until she attended college. She began at the University of Iowa in Iowa City followed by the Bible College in LeMars, Iowa and later graduated from Grand Rapids Bible College in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1958.

Dorothy had lived in Des Moines since 1960, working as a secretary for the B&B Optical Company. She married Robert Hemmye in 1963. The couple lived at Ewing Trace until Robert’s death in May of 2005. She loved her pets and collected cookbooks. Dorothy was a lifetime, active and working member of Soteria Church, formerly Willow Creek Baptist Church.

She is now home and at rest with Christ and those who preceded her in death including, her parents; husband, Robert; brother, Harold; sister, Betty; brothers-in-law, William Wilson, Jerry Palmer and Glen Leavitt.

Dorothy is survived by her sisters, Helen (Edward) Wilson Southard and Leone Leavitt; sister-in-law, Phyllis Hays; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the Madrid Home caregivers for their loving care and concern during the time Dorothy resided there.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2020 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Dorothy will be laid to rest at Avon Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Baptist Children’s Home, 354 West Street, #1, Valparaiso, IN 46383-6298 in loving memory of Dorothy.
