Joan M. Shrader
December 21, 2019
Joan M. Shrader, age 88, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2019 in Des Moines, Iowa. Joan was born August 10, 1931 in Chariton, Iowa to Lowell and Nona (Day) Gullion. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and never missed the chance to watch “her” Hawkeyes play. During her working years, she was a keypunch operator for Continental Western Insurance Company in Urbandale. After retirement, Joan enjoyed working as a cashier for many years at the Harding Hills HyVee. She enjoyed calling Bingo, playing Hand & Foot cards, reading, and doing puzzles. She was a fixture at the Northside Senior Center and some of her favorite pastimes included going to the Iowa State Fair and taking boat rides at the lake. Joan loved all animals and birds. She volunteered her time at the grocery store at Luther Park Apartments and she was a Sunday School teacher for Union Park Baptist Church. Her faith and love of Jesus was a guiding force in her life and she shared that love through her many good works. Joan is loved by her family and will be missed by all who knew her. She never knew a stranger and her laughter could light up a room.
Joan is survived by her son Rickey Shrader of Des Moines, daughter Kathy (Russ) Bishop of Johnston, and her daughter Donnelle Turnbull of Ankeny. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Scott (Jessica) Bishop, Sara (Seth) Daniels, Michael B. (Sheena) Bishop, Jimmy (Amy) Bishop, and Justin Turnbull; great-grandchildren, Lily Bishop, Noah and Ever Daniels, James and Jordan Bishop, and Kate Bishop; siblings, Dan (Carol) Gullion, Junior Gullion, Jacqui DiBlasi, and Jerry (Janet) Gullion; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and countless friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lowell and Nona Gullion, brother Randy Gullion, sister Joyce Hardman; and daughter-in-law, Debbie Shrader.
Services will be held at The Church at Union Park (formerly Union Park Baptist Church), 821 Arthur Avenue, Des Moines on Saturday, December 28, 2019. Visitation will begin at 10AM, followed by funeral service at 11AM. There will be a luncheon held after the service at the church. Graveside committal will be held at 2:30 PM at Gullion Cemetery in Attica, IA.
