Russell L. Reel, age 77, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center. Russell was born on November 1, 1942 in Milo, Iowa. He was a longtime resident of Des Moines. Russell graduated from South East Warren High School in 1961 and then attended mechanic school for a year. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy having served his country during Vietnam and served in Iceland for 4 years as a Seabee.
Russell was united in marriage to Barbara on May 19, 1983 and the two shared 35 beautiful years together. Some of his hobbies and interests included flat track and Duro racing which he did in North and South Dakota. He also enjoyed watching football and NASCAR. Above everything, Russell enjoyed time spent with his family and friends.
If there was ever a hill up and down the river, Big Daddy would be the first to try!
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Barbara Reel; brothers, Merrill Reel and Richard and Fran Reel; and host of extended family and friends.
Russell was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley McReynolds; and parents, Russell and Katherine Reel.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 27, 2019, with funeral service following at 11 a.m., at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will take place at 1 p.m., at Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.

He was such a good friend. We had some good times. I wish I could have spent more time with him in his later years.

Russ was one of the first to see the potential of our kids and fully supported their bowling careers. He was a very kind man and a true friend of our family. May he rest in peace.
