Ervin Sutherland

Ervin Sutherland now enjoys the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He passed away on November 15, 2019. He was born on March 21, 1921. He was raised on a farm near Hart, Michigan.

At the age of 17,his repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ brought salvation to his soul. After high school he took his father's advice and entered machinist school. The war came along and he volunteered for the Army in order to serve where he might be given a choice. He served as a machinist in the Army both in Egypt and Italy.

Eva Arkebauer, a friend, wrote to him during these war years. After the war ended and after nine years of seeking her hand, he won her heart and they were married in Lincoln, Nebraska on December 14, 1951. They raised five children together. He supported his growing family by working at Armstrong Tire Company as an engraver. Upon retiring he served the Lord Jesus by printing Joy Gospel Tracts for Ron Reeves and later laminating Gospel verses even until his 98th year for Brent and Sarah Hardie's work in Zambia, Africa. Through the years he enjoyed fellowship with his beloved brethren as gathered to the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We will remember him for his many acts of loving kindness that he and his wife Eva did on behalf of the many whom they served. They were always fixing something from sewing machines to tape recorders for the saints of God.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Eva; sister, Beverly Eitniear Veltman (Bob), and all his children: Ruth Harder (Frank) of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Jonathan Sutherland (Mary) of Walla Walla, WA, Mark Sutherland (Debby) of Walla Walla, WA, Dan Sutherland (Rachel) of Walla Walla, WA, Paul Sutherland (Esther) of Orland, CA; as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The services will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines on Saturday, December 7th at 11:00 AM. There will be a visitation on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the same location. A private interment will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Ervin. These contributions will be used toward Bibles and other missionary needs in Zambia.
