Dick was born June 3, 1938, in Des Moines to Helen Mae (Cosper) and Harry Joseph Dearden. He graduated from East High School and served in the Iowa National Guard from 1956-62 and worked in the grocery industry and later manufacturing. In 1964, he and his bride, Sharon Lee Dearden took an interest in politics and volunteered for the first time door knocking for President Johnson and Governor Hughes. Dick then worked in every Presidential and Gubernatorial election following. He served as Polk County Democratic Chair from 1979-81 and was a National Delegate for President Clinton in 1996. With the support of his family, friends and labor, he was proudly elected to the State Senate in 1994 and served until 2017.
In his spare time, Dick enjoyed time with his family and friends, fishing and hunting with his sons, grandchildren and friends, gardening, and was an avid Dodgers fan. He was a member of AMVETS, Izaak Walton League, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and AFSCME Retirees.
Dick is survived by his children, David (Kristen), Mark (Minda), and Pam Conner; grandchildren, Ryan (Kara), Samantha (Brandon), Mikayla, Emily, Eden, and Annika; and great-grandchildren, Briar and Lilly. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sharon; brother, Jerry Dearden; and son-in-law, Tracy Conner.

Some of my best memories of growing up were when Dave and i would pile into the family car and head south to hunt pheasant and quail with Babe. Dick was such a great guy and always made me fell like one of the family. I will remember his great laugh and his love for life and his family. Blessings on all if his kids and grandkids.

Dear Dearden Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Did you know: your dad helped our early childhood program navigating through the DNR as we initiated a nature based early learning program. On that issue and so many your dad demonstrated such a committed-to-the-very-best of Iowa values public servant persona. I am honored to have known him. Peace be to you, loving memories be your guide.

When I think politics, I think Deardens. Dick and Sharon were tireless, fierce advocates in Polk County Democrats and the Iowa Democratic Party for decades, inspiring countless others to join the cause, So many caucuses, so many conventions, so many crusades over the years and so much fun all the time. I loved you dearly and it was an honor and privilege to know you, to learn from you, to work beside you, enjoying every, single, crazy moment! God Bless

David and Family, So sorry to hear of your dads passing. Although, I cant remember your folks, I know they mustve been great parents because of the great children they raised. David, I remember fondly our grade school years, and then getting reacquainted at East. I would like to see you at one of EHS events, especially our next reunion. Time we catch up with each other. May God be with you and yours during this sorrowful time. You will be in my prayers.

Sharon and family - sorry to learn that Dick passed away - he was a wonderful State Senator and friend to many, many people. He was a strong and energetic Democrat who knew what grassroots politics is all about - he never wavered in his commitment to work for and elect Democrats to office. Thank you for sharing him with all of us who believed in the same causes that he did. Take care to all of you
