George S. Karaidos, Jr.
October 22, 2019
George S. Karaidos, Jr., was born in Anoka, MN on July 21, 1933 to George Karaidos, Sr. and Winnie (Martin) Karaidos. He passed away on October 22, 2019 at MercyOne Hospital from complications of surgery with family and friends at his side.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2019, at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th Street SW in Altoona, with visitation following until 8:00 p.m. A private family burial will be held at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
George was inducted May 26, 1953 into the Army where he served in Germany and Korea as an Artillery Mechanic in the 48th AAA Automatic Weapons Battalion, and was honorably discharged on March 31, 1960 ranked as a Corporal (E-4).
He followed in his father’s footsteps and began his career as the local “Chili King” when he returned from his military duty. George’s father had started the family business approximately 100 years ago, and “Jr.” has been in charge for over 62 years. He had Graffiti Nights, various contests and music shows at the Chili King on Hickman Road. The Chili King was a hopping place to be and was mentioned frequently by Dic Youngs (Youngsey) on the older KIOA 940 radio station.
George and his wife, Karen (Finley) Karaidos, were marred on July 4, 1985 at Lakeside Chapel in Lake Tahoe, NV. They loved spending any spare time at their second home at Lake Ponderosa. George was an avid fisherman. He had also been a barefoot water skier in his younger years, and belonged to a local club. He even skied on the Des Moines River! George also enjoyed participating in many local parades—Beaverdale, Urbandale, North High School events, Johnston Green Days and the Iowa State Fair, driving his 1957 Chevy Belair convertible and having someone else drive his 1934 Ford Roadster.
His biggest thrill was being asked to appear on Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” tv program, showcasing the Chili King—both George AND the restaurant in October, 2014. (See reruns on The Food Channel). He was also mentioned in Bill Bryson’s book “The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid”.
George loved his alma mater Des Moines North High School (Class of 1951), and was chosen and inducted into their Hall of Fame earlier this year. He and Karen loved to eat out and thoroughly enjoyed dining at Chuck’s in Highland Park. They also enjoyed attending almost all of North High basketball games in recent years.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Karen, and his children: Lori Flook, Windsor Heights, IA; Randy Karaidos, Des Moines, IA; and Larry Karaidos, Adel, IA. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Andrea Flanagan Reese (Justin), Urbandale, IA; Stephanie Arrigo (Dave), Parkville, MD; Katie Seidman (David), Norfolk, VA; Nathan Karaidos (Erica), Van Meter, IA; Colby Karaidos, Des Moines, IA; Jordan Johnson (Cole), Norwalk, IA; Kelsey Opague (Jeff), Norwalk, IA; Taylor Karaidos and Matthew Karaidos, Adel, Iowa. Also surviving are his 13 great-grandchildren, his sister, Helen Cunningham, Winterset, IA, along with many other relatives and many, many friends and acquaintances. George also leaves behind his beloved dog Skeeter Davis Karaidos. He was predeceased by his parents, son Gary, sister Marie and brother Jim.
He always had an ornery grin on his face, a sparkle in his eyes, and was ready for any adventure.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the local Animal Rescue League.
George has now left the building. LONG LIVE THE KING who will always be loved and never forgotten.

Our sympathy goes out to the family, George was a great guy! We enjoyed having him in Sunday School. He would ask questions or make a comment and either make us think or laugh. We were blessed to get to know him.

Very sad news from Des Moines have reached us here at Greece that George passed away.
I have known George more than 50 years, first as my boss at the "Chili King" and then as a business partner when we started "Stake Baron" at 5418 Douglas Ave. He was an extraordinary man. Sincere and modest, but always proud of his Greek Heritage!
He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

We want to send our sincere condolences to George's family. He held a special place in our lives along with so many who hung out at 'The King' and our supper of choice while meeting with our friends or someone new. George was the best, so very nice, we'll never forget the time spent at The King. He was always there with a helping hand for all his friends of which he had many young & now old. We'll never forget him and how he allowed us to meet many life long friends at the Original Drive In, back before the movie & roller skates only in a skating rank. We've been married 53 years largely Thanks to George.letting us have a place to park and meeting friends we never would have meant. The Chili King was the Original "American Graffiti" in the late 50's & early 60's, and the cars, WOWl. Thank You, George. In our memories forever. Mike & Sandi

Dear Karen, Laurie, Randy, Larry, and family:
Betty and I were so saddened at the recent passing of our good friend and alumni Hall of Famer, George. Everyone that knew George said good things about him and he just made people that he was around feel good. His service to our country, North High, and to our community, has been well documented. Every time we visited The Chili King on Hickman, George always made us feel happy and appreciated. George and Karen were a wonderful couple and they both loved and were so proud of their children.
Our thoughts and prayers will be with you in the days that lie ahead.

I loved working for George! I remember the buses that used to come in from George, Iowa during the wrestling tournaments and how busy we were after the Pope visited Living History Farms in 79. I remember the Christmas bonus George generously gave out and the loans he gave employees. He was the best boss I ever had. To this day, I still wash dishes without a dish rag, so I can feel if they're greasy, and face my dollar bills the same direction. King George will be missed dearly.

I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS. No words can express how sad we are of losing our dear friend. My heart breaks for you all, but especially for you Karen. I have known you since high school. I cannot imagine how it feels to lose the love of you life, who you have spent so years with enjoying each other and family. These past several months have been difficult for your family. Find peace in the happy memories. I know I will. I will always remember George as kind, quiet , a loyal friend, a little ornery, a fun spirit, and always up for whatever us girls decided to drag our spouses into. He was always watching or listening to sports, even when he was supose to be playing board games. Thank you for bringing George into this journey of life with us. We will someday ALL be together again. We love you. HUGS, PRAYERS AND LOTS OF LOVE. Mike and Diane

To Karen and Family: youve suffered a huge loss with Georges passing and my deepest condolences to all of you. I was truly lucky to have you all in my life. I will miss George and all the fun times we enjoyed, like our trips to Chicago, Branson, Missouri (twice), and all the times shared with you and George. I feel very honored and blessed to be a friend. George and I traded so many jokes, much to the chagrin of you and Jerry. He will greatly missed by so very many people. May he Rest In Peace. Love, Vicki
