Richard William Kail, Jr.
September 12, 2019
Richard William Kail, Jr., 80, passed away surrounded by his family Thursday, September 12, 2019. He was reunited with his wife Jackie, the love of his life, who preceded him in death on August 24th of this year.
Joint services will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, the anniversary of the day they first met. Visitation will be held from 3:00-6:00 PM followed by the memorial service at 6:00 PM.
Dick was born on April 26, 1939 to Gertrude and Richard Kail, Sr. in Des Moines, IA. He was a proud graduate of East High School and looked forward to his reunions but also enjoyed attending Roosevelt’s reunions as well, where Jackie graduated from.
He retired from the Des Moines Police Department as a Sergeant, after 34 years of loyal, dedicated service. Retirement was short and he worked another 17 years at the US Marshall Service as a Court Security Officer. He was a member of the Auburn-Union Park Masonic Lodge and the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.
Dick will be most remembered for his warmth, kindness, compassion and always willing to help others in need. He was famous for his unique and humorous storytelling. He enjoyed keeping in touch with his childhood friends and his DMPD brothers in blue. Dick loved spending time with his family (especially his grandsons) and friends. He always looked forward to following the Iowa Hawkeyes and traveling around the world with the love of his life, Jackie.
Dick is survived by his sister, Jan Biddle of Des Moines, IA; his son, Rick (Becky) of San Diego, CA; his daughter, Shelly (Tim) Tyler of Des Moines, IA; and grandsons, Jake of Johnston, IA and Zak (Kate) of Ames, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and his wife.

I truly enjoyed your parents at the ISPA events, retirement dinners and even just visiting with them out in public. They are a perfect example to others for what dedication, devotion, love for family means. Your dad was a gentleman and he showed others what that looks like. Opening doors for your mom for example. Look over your guest list and you will see how many people they touched. I will be thinking of you all.

We loved your mom and dad. We had a lot of fun with them through the years at ISPA conventions and other get togethers. They were both full of life. They got us started on cruise vacations, so we always compared notes when we saw them. God Bless them and your family.

To the family of Richard and Jackie ,
We met your parents on one of the Hawkeye cruises through a mutual dear , Evelyn , and her daughter Bobbie . What a fun , genuine couple ! Your Dad had some great stories & your Mother was always so interested in what was going on in our lives . Many times we passed lives at Bobbie & Tims home . They spoke often of their children , and grandchildren . Thinking of all of you . Such a joy to have met them !

Shelly and family, My love and wishes of comfort are extended to you as you move through this time of loss. What an amazing bond your parents must have had that they could not be apart for a month, before one joined the other. I know how much you loved them, Shelly, as I remember standing at your desk at Lawson and you telling stories about them. I think you got Dads storytelling genes! Peace be with you and your entire family. ??

Rick, Shelly and family, Im saddened to learn of the recent passings of your parents. They were wonderful. Fun, giving, principled and wise. They were role models to me, how to live as good people and parents. And always so supportive and helpful. Im a better person for having known them and hold fast to the cherished memories of time with them.
