Donald Robert "Sonny" Gale

Donald Robert “Sonny” Gale, 90, passed away peacefully September 8, 2019, at Good Samaritan Society Care Center in Indianola.

Sonny was born July 12, 1929 in Des Moines to Don and Ruth (McFarland) Gale. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1949 and entered the U.S. Army where he served two years in Korea. Following his military service, he returned to Iowa, married, moved to California and had two children.

Sonny was an outdoorsman and owned Gale’s Lawn Service for 30 years, in California. He later moved to Kansas City where he worked for MJC Properties for a few years before returning to Des Moines in 1985.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Geraldine, Betty and Tillie; grandson, Josh Doyle; and great-granddaughter, Brenna Doyle.

He is survived by his two children, Don E. (Lyle) Gale of Kansas City, Missouri and Diana (Rob) Ono of Aurora, Colorado; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his life companion, Jackie Wilde; and her four children, Steve (Sandy) Wilde, Cheryl Ouverson, Linda (Doug) Amis and Lisa (Butch) Wilmes; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many other loving relatives and friends. He will be greatly missed by many people.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Sonny will be laid to rest with military honors at 11 am Thursday at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
