Opal Thompson

Opal Alene Thompson, age 94, passed away Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Parkridge Specialty Care in Pleasant Hill.
Opal was born March 8, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa to George and Vina (Chambers) Strong. She married Earl Thompson on May 22, 1946 in Bethany, Missouri and they enjoyed 73 years together. Opal was a member of the Salvation Army. She loved Bingo and was nicknamed the “Bingo Queen”. She enjoyed going to Prairie Meadows and collected salt and pepper shakers, music boxes, and clocks. Her greatest joy was her family. She loved going on family vacations and spending as much time with them as possible.
Opal is survived by her husband, Earl; children, Peggy, Ellen (Jim), Earl, Dixie, Donna (Antonio), Debra (Ron), and Robert (Melodi); 19 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Arlene, Harriet, Peachy, Mary, and Maddie; brother, Fred; and many other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Jane; sisters, Beatrice and Birdie; brother, Virgil; and parents, George and Vina Strong.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 16, 2019 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Many memories of Opal over the years. At one time, they lived close to Mikes parents. We would run into Opal & Earl out to Prairie Meadows. She loved her family. Now shes celebrating with those that have gone before her. Thoughts and prayers for Earl and family in the days ahead

We remember with great fondness Opal and send our prayers to the family - especially Earl. She was a good Salvationist and we are blessed to have known her. I'm sure she will be missed by her family but we will all see her again at the Heavenly reunion .
