I was deeply saddened to read of Steve's passing. He and I were stationed together at the Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro California until Steve got out and returned to Des Moines. Steve and I were assigned to the same com shop, he as a wireman and me a radio tech, and quickly discovered that we both were from Des Moines. We lived in the same barracks and hung out together. His gruff demeanor and imposing size often intimidated the new junior lieutenants who arrived at our squadron for training. But Steve was usually pretty easy going with a wicked sense of humor.
Coming home on leave one time Steve introduced me to his girlfriend Nola. It was obvious she was the one for him. After I moved back we didn't get to see each other very often. Life got in the way.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your son, father and grandfather. The world is a little poorer today. I cherish the time we served together and the many crazy things we did.
