Vicki and Family,
I am sorry to hear of your loss. You and Kara were great in your Caring Bridge updates and how you stayed so close to Jim during his time in the Kavanagh House.
I have spent the last few days reminiscing on the many years of working with Jim. I keep thinking of the final speech given by Gen Douglas McCarther to the graduating class of West Point. It was titled, "Duty, Honor, Country." Gen Kessler conducted his career with those traits as his compass.
I think of all the years and know that we always got the job done safely.
I am a better person for having Known Jim Kessler and know that if I ever had a problem I could go to him for help. Not just as soldier, but as a friend.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and know that God will guide you in the future.

BG Kessler was responsible for changing the lives of many of Iowa 's finest Soldiers. As the State Aviation Officer, COL Kessler sent many of us to Fort Rucker to attend Warrant Officer Initial Entry Flight School. During those years it would have been hard to predict that he was developing and mentoring so many of us to prepare for future deployments around the world. With his vision and leadership, Iowa Army Aviation continues to be the best. Strength and Courage, CW5 Joedy VanVelzen

Jim and Ray were great buddies in college which was a good thing for me since Jim would often "loan" Ray the gas money to take me out. Years later Jim occasionally got to California where Ray and I lived and would visit us. This was before e met Vicky and he was a lonely man. He and Ray would hit the local bars and come home late. Ray would hit the rack but Jim and I would often sit up till the wee hours playing cards.
Years later Jim and Vicky brought their lovely daughter Kara to visit us in Northern Ca and I had the joy of introducing Kara to my love of horses. We visited them in Clive and the lasting friendship spanned decades. He will be terribly missed by his family and all of us old friends.

I met Jim 63 years ago while we were Freshmen at Colorado State.
We became close friends and pledged Phi Delta Theta fraternity in 1957 and were college roommates in the fraternity house for three years.
So many memories..I will always remember the day in 1959 when Jim got his pilot's license through the ROTC program. He told me I was flying with him as his first "customer". Already giving orders and not yet an officer! Because ,by then I had great confidence in him, I did. It was my FIRST time in an airplane..an Army issue Piper Cub. Flew all around the campus.
A great friend he was. He brought Vicky to Northern California 9 years ago, to help celebrate my 50 year anniversary with my wife Carole. Jim had known Carole since I met her in college in1959.
Carole and I were lucky enough to visit with Jim and Vicky, three years ago in Clive.
So many memories of a great friend and man. JIM was truly, "A man's man."
God Bless Vicky and the Kessler family.
